With 84 Grammy Award categories, each year's list of nominations can be counted on to deliver a number of surprises for the music industry. Drake was the most streamed artist on Spotify and Apple Music in 2018 and "Scorpion" has dominated the Billboard charts since it came out this past summer.

While the song's commercial success somewhat excuses this lapse in judgment, it would have made more sense to stop at the nod for "Best Pop Duo/Group Performance" - without letting it slither into two of the most prestigious categories: "Record of the Year" and "Song of the Year".

The Recording Academy delayed unveiling the nominees by two days because former President George H.W. Bush's funeral and public viewing this week in Washington. Portnow also announced he would be leaving the academy in 2019.

What does the expansion in nominees mean? A record five of the other nominations went to female artists.

2019 Grammy nominees in Album of the Year category include artists in this combination photo, from left to right: Cardi B, Brandi Carlile, Drake and H.E.R., Post Malone, Janelle Monáe, Kacey Musgraves and Kendrick Lamar. In best new artist, she's one of six women nominated for the prize, along with Bebe Rexha, Dua Lipa, Margo Price, Chloe x Halle and Jorja Smith. Justin Timberlake, whose "Man of the Woods" albums flopped earlier this year, picked up a nod for "Say Something", his collaboration with Chris Stapleton.

Gambino's "This Is America" is vying for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

The Grammys will be held on February 10th, 2019 at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, California. That's how dominant he was this year.

After receiving two Grammy nominations for her breakthrough "Bodak Yellow" last year, Cardi B continues her hot streak with five nods, including Record of the Year for her hit "I Like It". As well, Drake collaborators Boi-1da and Noah Shebib were nominated for their production work. The OVO superstar's Scorpion is also in the Album Of The Year race.

- Best jazz vocal album: "My Mood Is You", Freddy Cole; "The Questions", Kurt Elling; "The Subject Tonight Is Love", Kate McGarry With Keith Ganz and Gary Versace; "If You Really Want", Raul Midon With The Metropole Orkest Conducted By Vince Mendoza; "The Window", Cecile McLorin Salvant. Although he was nominated for album of the year, surprisingly, he did not win a place in the best rap album competition.

And in the historical-album category, Jackie Shane: Any Other Way, a box set celebrating the career of the transgender soul singer, has a chance.

Taylor Swift, a two-time album of the year victor, also only earned one nomination.

Mac Miller, who died in September, earned a nomination for best rap album with "Swimming". Seems like we've heard that joke before. No women were either.
