India suffered a huge blow ahead of the first Test with young opener Prithvi Shaw ruled out after suffering ankle ligament damage during their final warm-up game against a Cricket Australia XI.

Specialist batsman Rohit Sharma and all-rounder Hanuma Vihari will vie for the No. 6 spot in the series-opening Test against Australia in Adelaide starting Thursday.

India's first session of the much-hyped series couldn't have gotten off to a worse start, with four of their batsmen falling to the drive.

"They haven't had great success in Australia in the past, as Australia haven't had in India".

Captain Tim Paine said Marsh's omission was due to a lack of consistency and he would benefit from returning to Sheffield Shield cricket to find form again.

Despite the questions over Australia's batting, India's ambitious Virat Kohli did not consider the home team vulnerable as he attempts to become the first winning captain in this country.

National day of mourning: What's open and what's closed on Wednesday
Cannon roared again outside the Capitol as the sun sank and his eldest son, former President George W. Bush, stood with his hand over his heart, watching the casket's procession up the steps.

"As this series wears on, and we get to places where the wicket might be a bit flatter and conditions might be a little warmer, our bowlers will be a bit exhausted then the all rounder position becomes important", said Paine.

Paine said: "Mitch Marsh probably hasn't been as consistent as he would like and we would like. They'll also be under great pressure, I think". "He's shown that over the last few years".

The Aussie batting may be in tatters but they have four world class bowlers in Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and spinner Nathan Lyon.

"Travis Head bowls some handy off spinners so we have options there but we'll be backing our bowlers", he said. Yes, they will miss Warner and Steve Smith, but that confidence level, the attitude and the approach you expect of an Australian player, an Australian team - the character of the Australian sides against whom I played - that character is not obvious in this Australian team. Vihari inspired one and all with his solid technique in England and has subsequently backed it up with solid knocks in warm up fixtures and A team matches.

Though selectors will be mindful of keeping Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins available all series, they believe their prized quicks can shoulder an extra workload while fresh.
