Last year, Cohen told Congress that talks about a Moscow Trump Tower project ended in January 2016.

Cohen gave a statement to congressional committees a year ago saying the president's company pursued a project in Moscow during the Republican primary but that the plan was abandoned "for a variety of business reasons". He falsely said that planning had ended in January 2016, that he had not considered to traveling to Russia in relation to the plans, and that he had not heard from any Russian officials about the project.

Cohen previously pleaded guilty in NY to violating federal campaign finance laws by arranging hush-money payments to women in 2016 "at the direction" of then-candidate Trump.

By that time, Trump was the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

Oh, and as journalists are noting, if Cohen is guilty of lying to Congress, that means Don Jr.is too.

Nadler did not go so far as to say the president could face impeachment, but rather that the issue should be revisited if a congressional investigation were to uncover further troubling evidence.

President Donald Trump on Thursday continued to distance himself from his former personal lawyer of 12 years by saying he only ever gave Michael Cohen the job as a reward for a "favor" Cohen did for Trump.

Trump said Thursday his ex-lawyer Michael Cohen was a "weak person" who was lying to get a reduced sentence after the fixer admitted misleading Congress over the Russian Federation investigation.

Cohen said he lied to "be loyal" to Trump and consistent with Trump's "political messaging".

President Donald Trump's intensifying attacks this week against the Russian Federation collusion investigation underscore a growing nervousness over how much evidence investigators may have accumulated on the 2016 Trump campaign's ties to Moscow. He added that Cohen "is not a very smart person".

"It's called flipping and it nearly should be illegal", Trump said.

Cohen admitted in federal court Thursday that Trump spoke with him more extensively about the proposed Trump Tower project in Moscow than he previously told Congress, pleading guilty to a charge brought by special counsel Robert Mueller. That real estate deal has been a focus of the special counsel investigation into whether the Trump campaign conspired with Russian operatives.

That's right: Individual 1 LIED. His lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said that Cohen was a "proven liar" and that Trump's business organization had voluntarily given Mueller the same documents cited in the guilty plea "because there was nothing to hide".

Cohen said nothing as a gaggle of reporters shouted questions at him.

He is far from the first person to be ensnared by the Mueller probe for making false statements thus far. It is not known, however, whether Mueller will seek to follow up with more questions for Trump, now almost halfway through his term in the White House.
