  • Many of the migrants are women and children. But according to President Trump keeps talking about how he believes the migrants are stone cold criminals

The United States closed its busiest border crossing with Mexico on Sunday after Mexican police broke up a protest of Central American migrants massed in Tijuana, scattering some demonstrators toward the border where USA officers hurled tear gas from the American side.

He questioned why the Mexican government "allowed" the migrants to rush the border, as there was advance intelligence that it was going to happen.

The San Ysidro Port of Entry - the busiest land border crossing in the western hemisphere, according to the federal government - was shut down for around five hours Sunday.

"We've been calling in the Rio Grande Valley for two years to send us help, and nobody has", said Cabrera, spokesperson for the National Border Patrol Council, noting that CBP and others were aware such a crisis was on the horizon for quite some time.

Trump said, referring to his central election pledge to build a wall across the US-Mexico border.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said the department would "not hesitate to shut down POEs [ports of entry] for security reasons".

His tweet came as the Mexican government reportedly said it would deport migrants who tried storming the USA border on Sunday.

He wrote on Twitter, "Mexico should move the flag waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries".

"We can't have all these people here", Mujica said. With a backlog of cases that number into the thousands, many migrants appear set to linger along the border for months, if not longer.

He said he understands that the migrants want to be part of the United States, "but there's a legal way to do it".

U.S. President Donald Trump has raised alarm for weeks about a caravan of Central American migrants as it approached the United States, with its members planning to apply for asylum on reaching the United States. They only retreated when authorities deployed tear gas, which is said to have been felt almost a mile away.

Rodney Scott, chief US Border Patrol agent in San Diego, said the vast majority of those assembled at the border were economic migrants who would not qualify for asylum, adding there were few women and children.

Footage from weekend border chaos included video images of mothers and toddlers rushing to avoid tear gas and/or pepper spray released from USA border officials into Mexico territory as means to disperse Central American migrants amassing at the border.

Tear gas fumes were carried by the wind toward people who were hundreds of feet away, including some children. "Congress, fund the WALL!" the president tweeted on Monday morning.

On Sunday, Mexico's Interior Ministry said that the country has sent 11,000 Central Americans back to their home countries since October 19. It said that 1,906 of those who have returned were members of the recent caravans.

Reports suggest Mexico has already deported roughly 100.
