  • KQ2 Forecast: Blizzard Warning in effect for entire KQ2 Viewing Area

On Sunday, strong winds and snow created blizzard conditions across much of Nebraska and parts of Kansas, Iowa and Missouri.

If you're just returning from a few days away for the Thanksgiving weekend...you may not have heard...a thick, heavy, wet, high-moisture content snow will unfold overnight into Monday morning. At Kansas City International Airport, almost 200 flights were canceled.

The National Weather Service office in Omaha/Valley issued a blizzard warning Saturday afternoon for south-central and southeastern Nebraska, southwest Iowa, and northwest Missouri. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported multiple fender-benders but by midmorning on Monday the Department of Transportation said all roads were opened.

Roybal said anyone who plans on flying to or from the Midwest should reach out to their airline to confirm their flight status before coming to the airport. The National Weather Service is warning those conditions will make travel hard in places.

Kansas officials are urging drivers to stay off the roads because of risky conditions across much of the state.

"It's going to be messy", said Todd Kluber, a National Weather Service meteorologist, hinting that the area could see even more blizzard-like conditions.

Kansas City International Airport shut down on Sunday afternoon as crews battled to clear the runway and de-ice planes.

To the west, parts of the Plains States were reporting 100 percent snow-and-ice-covered roads before noon today. Stay in your vehicle if you do become stuck.

In the Loop, snow wasn't sticking to the ground until around 6:15 a.m., leaving only an inch or two on untreated sidewalks by the time the snow ended a couple hours later. In addition to heavy snow, strong winds will accompany this system resulting in potential blizzard conditions and risky travel conditions to end the Holiday Weekend. Blowing and drifting snow will linger through the day.

Most of Sunday evening's flights and some on Monday out of O'Hare to Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International have already been grounded, and that means flights out of Kalamazoo will also be cancelled.

The storm also made holiday travel treacherous on the roads and miserable for air travelers in the Midwest starting over the weekend and continuing into Monday.

This year's blizzard is the worst storm to hit Chicago since November 25-26, 1975, which dumped 8.9 inches on the Windy City. He said rain will give way to heavy snowfall and "near whiteout conditions" that will make for risky travel.
