European Union divorce deal in peril after two UK Cabinet ministers quit

"May's soft Brexit deal blasted by all sides".

In his resignation letter, Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab said that May's plan threatened the integrity of the UK.

"But I believe with every fiber of my being that the course I have set out is the right one for our country and all our people", she said, adding that the alternative was a "path of deep and grave uncertainty".

Raab is the second Brexit secretary to quit over May's plans to leave the European Union, the biggest shift in British policy in more than 40 years.

The quirky largely Protestant Northern Ireland party May's minority government relies on to stay in office has said it will vote against the draft Brexit agreement when it formally comes before Parliament next month.

Two cabinet ministers, and two junior ministers, have resigned over the deal - while some Conservative MPs have attempted to force a leadership contest by writing letters of no confidence in the prime minister.

Just think: if Labour had spent the past two years campaigning to "stop Brexit" through a "people's vote", then Theresa May's threat of "my deal or no Brexit" might have seemed plausible to the ERG, who might well have backed her & won the vote.

The draft agreement, reached between European Union and United Kingdom negotiators on Tuesday, will pass to an EU summit later this month where the EU's other 27 countries will be asked whether to approve it.

Beyond walking away, it was the only tactic she had left.

"Ultimately this allows us to take back control", he said.

Earlier on Thursday, Tusk announced that the Council, which brings together EU Heads of State and Government, would hold a summit on Sunday with a view to adopting the draft agreement on Brexit worked out by negotiators representing both sides. May gave no date for a vote in parliament but she will need the votes of about 320 of the 650 lawmakers.

29 killed in Northern California wildfire, matching deadliest; 228 still missing
Earlier this year, wildfires raged through huge portions of California, claiming homes, businesses, and lives in the process. In Southern California, where the Woolsey Fire scorched 83,275 acres, the blaze was only 10 per cent contained.

Yet if the British Parliament rejects Mrs May's compromise soft Brexit proposal, there is no certainty that the "remain" cause would triumph. But even that doesn't guarantee success. The most controversial are provisions that would keep the United Kingdom aligned with European Union rules as long as necessary to avoid border checks between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Screenshot of Nick Timothy's headline for Daily Telegraph, November 14, 2018. He resigned from the Cabinet in July in protest at her handling of the exit negotiations. This morning began with Vara submitting his resignation, followed by McVey.

The agreement "leaves the United Kingdom in a half-way house with no time limit on when we will finally be a sovereign nation", he wrote in his resignation statement, which he published on his Twitter account.

In between the two came the blow about Raab.

Mr Bone told talkRADIO in October that although many Tory MPs were "unhappy" with Brexit negotiations, they wouldn't want a change in leader.

"MPs have been debating how best to deliver on the result of the referendum ever since the result of the referendum took place in 2016".

An anti-Brexit demonstrator holds a placard opposite the Houses of Parliament in London on Nov 13. May has been adamant there won't another referendum on leaving the European Union. Should Brady receive 48 letters from disgruntled Tory MPs, it would trigger a vote of no-confidence against May as party leader, and consequently as prime minister.

May has been widely criticised for refusing to offer any choice but her deal or a no-deal Brexit. "She went to the table with very little to offer and asked for a lot", said businessman Patrick Hughes, owner of an animal feed business in the border village of Jonesborough.

With opposition among both remainers and Brexiteers, the math suggests otherwise.

Raab only took over as Brexit Secretary in July, replacing the original holder of the job, David Davis who quit because he, like Raab, could not reconcile with May's European Union withdrawal proposals.
