She recalled how hard she found it to manage Barack's hectic work schedule when he first entered politics and how his long hours away from the family home put pressure on their family.

"They learned how to use the machine".

On the event page for a previously announced midnight release party for the book, the Seminary Co-op highlighted Obama's South Side roots and her membership at the Seminary Co-Op. "I stopped even trying to smile".

During the interview, the mother of two also delved into deeply personal issues, including her past fertility and marital struggles, her profound anger towards Trump, and the bigotry and hate she encountered on the campaign trail. She told the students not to take it personally when their relatives and close friends seem uneasy with their ambitious choices. "I'm going to be looking closely at who handles themselves and each other with dignity and respect so that by the time people get to the general people aren't beat up and battered".

An earlier version of this story misstated the racial composition of Whitney Young Magnet High School when former first lady Michelle Obama attended there.
