In July 2011, a Boeing 737-800 aircraft belonging to Trinidad-based Caribbean Airlines crashed at Cheddi Jagan after landing too far down the runway and running out of braking space, injuring several people.

Bedessee said takeoff had been delayed by about 45 minutes because one of the left-side doors had "not closed properly" and a maintenance crew was called to fix the problem.

The relevant overseas authorities have been informed and an investigation is underway.

Just 11 minutes later, the pilot indicated a hydraulic problem and requested permission to return to the airport.

Its right wing and engine were badly damaged.

Boeing Co is looking into the incident, a spokesman said.
