Welbeck's teammate Mesut Ozil has since taken to Twitter to wish the attacker a speedy recovery.

Welbeck collapsed in pain after a collision in the Sporting penalty area 25 minutes into the game at the Emirates and immediately waved for medical attention as he writhed on the ground.

The 27-year-old striker was given oxygen on the field before being stretchered off with his right leg in a brace, as players from both sides watched on in distress.

The game was then stopped for several minutes after Welbeck contested a header with Gaspar before appearing to suffer an ankle injury on landing.

The full extent of his injury is not yet known but it is described as a "significant ankle injury" on arsenal.com.

"Every injury is different".

England confirm farewell cap for record-scorer Wayne Rooney against USA
It is understood Rooney's involvement with England for the fixture will be made official in the coming days. And Ronaldo was asked about Rooney ahead of his showdown with Manchester United this week.

He deservedly received a call up to Gareth Southgate's England squad this afternoon but after what looks like a serious injury against Sporting CP tonight, it looks like he will be out for a long spell.

"Now he's at the hospital and the news is at the moment we are going to wait, but we think this is a serious injury".

The Arsenal forward's career has been plagued by injuries, and this could be the worst of the lot.

Meanwhile, fellow Arsenal star Ozil tweeted his support to the England global. "Get well soon Danny". His injury was hard also for the mentality of the players because they looked at the big injury, but when you are playing football in competitive matches it can happen.

Welbeck pulled out of the England squad to face United States of America following his injury, having been named in the 28-man squad earlier in the day.

It looks nearly certain that Welbeck will miss the upcoming global friendly.
