  • Samsung gives peek at device that will fold

Then at SDC18 on Wednesday, Samsung confirmed that it's indeed making displays with holes at the top - Apple, by the way, also has a patent on tech that allows manufacturers to drill holes through screens, which may be a telling detail for the future of its hardware.

Samsung said it would be ready for mass production in the coming months. The device can be opened to reveal a 7.3-inch tablet.

Normally, one doesn't think of Samsung as necessarily being a haven for the worldwide development community.

The device could have multiple screens or at least one can run more than one application at a time and since the foldable phone is still work in progress, there may be many variations from now and when the final design is signed off.

After lacklustre response, Apple pauses production of the iPhone XR
A report by the Nikkei financial daily fueled concerns that the iPhone XR was facing weak demand just days after it went on sale. The publication claims Foxconn will now produce ~100,000 less units per day, a notable 20% - 25% drop versus the former outlook.

The unfolded screen of the upcoming phone is bigger than Samsung's biggest smartphone, the Note9, which is 6.4 inches, and the iPhone XS Max at 6.5 inches. And it has tough and entrenched competition in Siri, Google, Cortana, Alexa in other devices. The app experience transitions from the smaller display to the larger display as the device unfolds.

"As Samsung's ecosystem of devices continues to grow, it creates more points of contact not just for Bixby, but for a growing number of third-party services as well".

Samsung and Huawei have been vying to be the world's first developer of a foldable smartphone. "Developers have more ways to reach users, and users get more opportunities to make the majority", Kyunghak said.

Dave Burke, vice president of engineering at Google, said at the Android Developer Summit that Google is "enhancing Android to take advantage of this new form factor with as little work as necessary". Huawei wants to release a foldable handset and LG is working on foldable TVs, according to The Verge. Royole said it would start filling orders late next month.
