  • Japanese pilot is arrested for being drunk ahead of flight from Heathrow

Due to the arrest, the flight's departure for Haneda airport scheduled for 7pm on Sunday local time was delayed by 1 hour and 9 minutes.

The driver of a crew bus at Heathrow Airport noticed the smell of alcohol on the co-pilot's breath and reported it to police, according to JAL.

The flight was operated by a Boeing 777 aircraft which holds up to 244 passengers.

He appeared in court in London on Thursday and pleaded guilty to exceeding the alcohol limit, according to the BBC.

A test later revealed that Jitsukawa had 189mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, almost 10 times the U.K.'s legal limit of 20 mg for pilots, according to the BBC.

He had reportedly consumed two bottles of wine and more than 1.8 litres (nearly four USA pints) of beer over six hours on the night before the flight.

He was arrested on October 28 just 50 minutes before the plane was due to leave, with the flight finally taking off after a 69-minute delay.

The limit for drivers in Britain is 80mg.

Predicted line-up against Derby County: Ruben Loftus-Cheek to continue recovery?
Lampard's Derby beat Manchester United and with luck, could have come out on top against another top-six Premier League team. Attention now turns back to league action this weekend and the manager wants his side to continue the good form built up.

The British Airways pilot was jailed for eight months after reporting for duty while four times over the limit.

Ishii said the government will consider regulations similar to those in overseas nations that specify acceptable limits in alcohol content in breath or blood tests. That is probably why he landed up at the Heathrow airport highly drunk and ready to board the flight.

JAL said the co-pilot was arrested Sunday for violating British aviation law.

'The company sincerely apologises to the passengers and to all affected by the employee's actions, ' JAL said in the press release. He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on 29 November at Isleworth Crown Court.

Under its internal rules, JAL limits two-pilot flights to routes of up to 12 hours.

Pilots should be highly responsible and should adhere to safety standards when it comes to both the craft, as well as themselves.

Following the Japan Airlines incident, Japan's transport ministry issued a document directed at all Japanese airlines calling for the implementation of measures to control excessive drinking by flight crew.
