  • Watch: Battling for Attention Over Oprah Mike Pence Forced to Tell GOP Voters ‘I’m Kind of a Big Deal Too’

"I paid to come here myself, and I approved this message", Winfrey said, explaining that she tracked down Abrams' cell phone number and called her to say she wanted to offer assistance in the final days of the campaign. "She cares about medicaid expansion, keeping families together", she said.

He said that Winfrey's comments about voter suppression, in particular, will resonate in a state where that has been a concern in the past.

Billionaire media mogul Oprah Winfrey, in the first of several campaign stops to boost Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams on Thursday, told the cheering crowd that they are poised "on the precipice of a historic election".

He did not have a negative comment for Winfrey.

"So I'm canvassing for Stacey Abrams", Winfrey said.

In one of the country's most high-profile races for governor, Democrat Stacey Abrams is trying to end 16 years of GOP rule in Georgia, with Republican Brian Kemp in a position to affirm his party's dominance.

Mr Pence has criticised Ms Abrams for using Ms Winfrey during her campaign.

Winfrey did not mention Pence who, in appearances same day, charged Abrams with being "bankrolled by Hollywood liberals" and derided Winfrey's presence as well as a recent campaign appearance for Abrams by Will Ferrell.

"I'd like to remind Stacey and Oprah and Will Ferrell, I'm kind of a big deal, too", Pence said, in an apparent reference to a line from Ferrell's hit 2004 film, "Anchorman".

"I don't want to go in those waters!" That's exactly where the polls and observers in Georgia see things going for Kemp and Abrams. "Are you voting for her?" "And to vote for myself", Winfrey said to cheers.

"I absolutely am", the wide-eyed, smiling woman responds. "Do you have an early voting plan?"

Winfrey praised Abrams for "standing strong for the values that matter to me and the values that matter to Georgians all over this state".
