The ‘sickening’ Trump ad that links cop killer to caravan migrants

  • Rep. Beto O'Rourke the Democratic candidate for Senate in Texas has raised $31 million from small donors

The online ad features courtroom footage of Luis Bracamontes - an illegal immigrant from Mexico convicted in the 2014 killings of two police officers in Sacramento, California - saying in accented English he would kill more cops.

A pair of Bush ads, one of which was the brainchild of Fox News founder Roger Ailes, depicted Dukakis - then the governor of MA - presiding over a "revolving door" prison system and giving out "weekend passes" to convicted murderers. He then reportedly returned to the United States in 2001, was deported, then returned again in 2002, all during Republican George W. Bush's administration.

"This ad, and your full approval of it, will condemn you and your bigoted legacy forever in the annals of America's history books", Al Cardenas, the Florida Republican Party's former chairman, wrote on Twitter.

With only a few days left until the midterm election, Donald Trump has stepped up his anti-immigration, fear-mongering, polarizing tactics with a blatantly racist new ad that even has some conservatives finally saying he's gone too far.

As for the new video, though, the campaign was silent Thursday and Parscale did not respond to requests for comment.

That ad was part of a blitz by Mr Trump's campaign, and his campaign manager, Brad Parscale, did several interviews to promote it.

Democrats are generally favoured to win the 23 seats they need to gain a majority in the US House of Representatives, an advantage they could use to block Trump's agenda.

"It is outrageous what the Democrats are doing to our Country", Trump tweeted with the video. Republicans have a stronger chance of keeping control of the Senate, according to opinion polls and non-partisan forecasters.

But this latest ad, which Trump first promoted late Wednesday afternoon, has been called out by some on the right as racist - and has even drawn comparisons to George H.W. Bush's infamous "Willie Horton" ads targeting Democrat Michael Dukakis in 1988.

Bracamontes was in the country illegally at the time of the shooting.

Horton was a convicted murderer who committed rape while furloughed under a programme in MA where Democratic nominee Michael Dukakis was governor.

The whole advert centered around William Horton, an African American man who in 1987, raped a white woman and stabbed her white fiancé, after he was released on a weekend furlough from the MA prison where he was serving his life sentence.

The Weekly Standard's Charlie Sykes said the Bracamontes ad "makes Willie Horton look rather tame by comparison".
