Cricket Australia releases findings after 'extremely regrettable' ball-tampering scandal

  • Taylor said he is looking forward to the review being made public

Following the reports, which poured some of the blame onto the game's administration, the Australian Cricketers' Association called for the heavy bans imposed on the trio of players to be immediately removed.

Smith and Warner were suspended from worldwide and domestic cricket for 12 months and Bancroft was given a nine-month ban for their part in the Newlands ball-tampering scandal.

Among 42 recommendations outlined by the review are the desire for Australian cricket to establish an ethics commission to oversee the ethical health of the game in Australia, and also the formation of the Australian Cricket Council to create a forum for frank discussion among the chairs of CA, the state associations, the ACA and the Cricket Umpires Association.

"This, we believe, is hugely significant".

"Basic fairness demands these independently verified contributing factors must now be taken into consideration and the penalties reduced".

The dark cloud of the ball tampering scandal continues to hang over Australian cricket. There's no doubt that the ball-tampering incident in South Africa was extremely regrettable and caused distress across our country.

Peever said some of the responses had been "at times hard to read and in some instances, hard to agree with", although Cricket Australia respected the review's findings.

Cricket Australia have been branded as "arrogant" and "controlling" and accused of treating its elite players like commodities, allowing "alpha-male" egos to develop a win-at-all-costs approach, according to a wide-ranging report on Monday.

Smith, Warner and Bancroft have missed three Tests but the ACA's calls raise the possibility of them returning for the four-Test series against India, which begins in Adelaide on 6 December.

Calls made to Saudi prince's office day writer slain
Amid pressure, Saudi Arabia acknowledged last week that the 59-year-old writer had died in what it said was a "fistfight". Mr Trump also said he had spoken to Prince Mohammed, who "strongly said that he had nothing to do with this".

Greg Dyer, the head of the Australian players' union, said all three players had been punished enough.

CA chairman David Peever insists there is nothing that will alter his board's hardline stance on Smith, Warner and Bancroft.

Sponsors stated that Cricket Australia sees their value exclusively in transactional terms.

The review warned that the ball-tampering incident should not be seen as an aberration or the failure of a handful of players.

'I think the general feeling around Australia, certainly the people I talk to, is they want them playing again, at worst domestic cricket. When you look back on it, it was a ridiculous mistake but it was sort of blown out of all proportion as well, the way it got covered, but that's the nature of Australian sport. "So the sanctions stand", said Peever at a media conference on Monday after the review was made public.

CA chairman David Peever has maintained the suspensions will be upheld while CA chief executive Kevin Roberts has suggested the players' case has been weakened because they opted to not appeal against their suspensions in March.

"We're not saying that what they did was right", Mr Nicholson said.

One of the most damning criticisms of Cricket Australia's broken culture stemming from the independent review was a passage which detailed how they refuse to listen to outside opinions and often ostracise those who dare express an alternate view.

However, he denied one of the Longstaff review's findings that players had abused their own staff on match days.
