  • CBI vs CBI Decision To Send Me on Leave'Patently Illegal And Unconstitutional, Says Alok Verma

Calling the Centre's action "patently illegal", Verma, in his plea, said it was in violation of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, which gives the CBI director a two-year term. It came amid a tussle between Verma and the agency's Special Director Rakesh Asthana.

The decisions, which included the mass transfer of CBI officers investigating corruption charges against Alok Verma's deputy Rakesh Asthana, will be scrutinised, the three judge bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi indicated. "All parties should protest against this along with Congress party", AAP leader Sanjay Singh said.

There were also slogans against Prime Minister-led Appointments Committee of the Cabinet which had issued the orders to send Alok Verma on leave.

The ruling BJP and the Opposition would wait for the Supreme Court's order in the removal of CBI director with bated breath today. Joint Director M Nageswar Rao, a 1986-batch Odisha cadre IPS officer, was appointed to look after the "duties and functions" of the director with "immediate effect" as an "interim measure".

Nearly a year before that, another bench of the Supreme Court had come down heavily on the CBI while hearing a coal scam case and had said the probe agency had become a "caged parrot" speaking in the voice of its political masters.

Japan, China Work to Elevate Ties Despite Differences
On its part, Japan held military drills involving a submarine last month in the South China Sea, where China has staked extensive territorial claims.

Observing that the crisis in the CBI sparked by the internal feud should not linger on in national interest, the Supreme Court on Friday set a two-week deadline for the CVC to complete its ongoing inquiry against CBI chief Alok Verma and said a retired apex court judge will monitor the probe.

Rahul Gandhi, the scion of India´s Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and president of the Congress party, was briefly taken to a Delhi police station after leading a march by hundreds of supporters to the CBI headquarters.

Following the arrest, the Congress said that Rahul Gandhi's arrest by an "autocratic" PM Modi government won't deter the party workers from exposing the dismantling of CBI to hide the Rafale scam. Not only that the Centre has also diluted the powers of Enforcement Directorate and RBI. Old-timers in Bihar recall Asthana as someone who fought shy of any publicity, not someone with no qualms about getting featured in a video made to eulogise him.

Following the ugly public spat, the government chose to send both Verma and his deputy Rakesh Asthana on leave.

On Tuesday, the CBI suspended its DSP and an aide of Asthana, Devender Kumar, who was arrested on Monday on the charge of falsification of records while probing allegations against meat exporter Moin Qureshi. Asthana, it was said, has close links with the top officials of the prime minister's office and was handling important cases against the opposition leaders.
