  • Jamal Khashoggi: Turkey demands Saudi Arabia reveals whereabouts of journalist's body

Saudi Arabia's chief prosecutor will arrive in Turkey on Sunday as part of the investigation and will meet with Turkish counterparts, according to Erdogan.

"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a strategic relationship with the United States that goes back to the 1930s". At first the Saudis said USA resident Khashoogi, a critic of corporate media darling Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, walked out of the consulate and said that it had no knowledge of his fate.

Central Intelligence Agency director Gina Haspel visited Turkey earlier this week to review evidence and later briefed United States leader Donald Trump in Washington.

The Turkish president's tone indicates he does not intend to allow the matter of Mr Khashoggi's death to quietly fade away, nor does he plan to help Saudi Arabia move away from the glaring worldwide spotlight that the case has focused on the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia said on Thursday the killing of Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and a critic of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was premeditated, reversing previous statements that it was unintended.

President Donald Trump shakes hands with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the Oval Office of the White House, March 20, 2018, in Washington, DC.

"Unfortunately there has been this hysteria in the media about Saudi Arabia's guilt before the investigation is completed", he said, in response to questions about the killing.

"The case of journalist Khashoggi is, of course, something incredible, I told the Saudi king yesterday in our telephone conversation", Merkel said at a press conference with Czech prime minister Andrej Babis.

Trump decries 'worst cover-up' over Saudi killing as U.S. takes first action
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday that the Saudi official will meet Turkish prosecutors during his visit. On October 2, the day of the killing, operatives disabled CCTV cameras at the consulate, Mr Erdogan said.

While these were some of the sharpest comments Mattis has made on the Khashoggi killing, he said the incident would not diminish ties with Saudi Arabia. The Saudi leadership has pushed responsibility down the chain of command.

"And what we say to people is wait until everything is done, then reflect on the results of the investigation, and then make a determination on whether this investigation was serious or not. They're detained in Saudi Arabia, and the investigation is in Saudi Arabia, and they will be prosecuted in Saudi Arabia", Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said at a regional defense forum in the Bahraini capital.

Trump has called the Khashoggi case "one of the worst cover-ups in history".

"Our Secretary of State has already revoked visas and will be taking additional measures", Mattis said.

Turkey and Saudi Arabia are not known to have an extradition treaty. "There are other things we can do that are very, very powerful, very strong, and we'll do them".

"It is clear that the judicial system in Turkey is better equipped to genuinely serve the cause of justice in this case", a senior Turkish official said, because Khashoggi was "murdered in Turkey by Saudi nationals who travelled to Turkey for this specific goal".

In a furious opinion piece published last night, Turki al-Dakhil, general manager of the Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya news channel, warned the USA "will stab its own economy to death" if it tried to impose sanctions.
