  • The Chaser project new ad onto Opera House as Jones apologises for Louise Herron interview

Racing NSW stewards have suspended betting on The Everest after conducting the barrier draw in private on Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday night, hundreds of torchlights shone on the Opera House as protesters attempted to disrupt the controversial promotion of a multi-million dollar horse race on the icon's sails.

"We are known for the Sydney Opera House; to use it to advertise a horse race is just taking advantage of it", said Aideen Keane, 16, brandishing a torch as she sat on the Opera House steps, with her mother, Lesa Hogan.

It comes at a time when there has already been significant backlash after radio host Alan Jones stepped in to implore NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian to allow The Everest to beam images on the Opera House's iconic sails.

During the interview last Friday Jones berated Herron, asking "who do you think you are?" repeatedly.

Protesters yelled "Shame" and used lights to attempt to obscure the projected images.

Indonesia tsunami: Search for survivors ends as death toll reaches 1500
On Friday, the death toll rose to 1,571, according to the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management. The twin disasters struck Palu and surrounding districts in Central Sulawesi province on September 28.

Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys took the decision to conduct the draw on Tuesday morning prior to the barrier draw function to circumvent any security risks as the fallout from use of the Opera House to promote the race continues.

Mr Greenwich said he would move a motion in parliament to amend the Sydney Opera House Trust Act to "stop the culture of a minister picking up the phone on behalf of his mates in the racing industry and telling the Opera House what to do".

Some 240,000 people have now signed a Change.org petition calling for the promotion to be stopped.

Protesters had been planning to demonstrate at the Opera House tonight. "They've even called for the sacking of the Opera House manager who told them where to get off. Let's remind Alan that the Opera House truly does belong to everyone, by supporting Louise Herron's staunch defence of one of our city and country's few instantly recognisable heritage landmarks".

The NSW Heritage Council said it was extremely disappointed with the government's decision which would turn the "international architectural masterpiece" into a billboard.
