  • Activists protest on the steps and plaza of the Supreme Court after the confirmation vote of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Capitol Hill Saturday Oct. 6 2018 in Washington

Protesters demonstrate on first day with newly sworn in Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh on the court at the Supreme Court in Washington, U.S., October 9, 2018.

Kavanaugh and his team are settling into the former chambers of Justice Samuel Alito, who moved to the offices vacated by retired Justice Anthony Kennedy. "I think, given our divides, it will pretty much fall predictably between those who are for and those who are against", Clinton said.

New Yorker Christine Ford, not the Dr. Christine Blasey Ford who described her sexual assault allegations before the Senate Judiciary Committee, tweeted: "It ain't no picnic for me either, ya know".

Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in -again, for the cameras, this time - Monday night at a White House ceremony, but not before President Donald Trump slammed Kavanaugh's opponents for a "campaign of personal destruction".

Democrats had fought tooth and nail to stop Kavanaugh´s candidacy, claiming that the accomplished, conservative-minded judge was not suited to the Supreme Court. "I will work very hard to achieve that goal", Kavanaugh said.

Kavanaugh's confirmation gave the Republican president a political victory ahead of crucial November 6 congressional elections.

As Gorsuch did in his first arguments a year ago, Kavanaugh focused heavily on the importance of following earlier decisions of the court.

Kavanaugh emphasized he will be an "independent" and "impartial" justice on the nation's highest court.

The bitterly divided U.S. Senate voted 50-48 on Saturday to confirm Kavanaugh, with just one Democrat supporting him.

"Four of the female clerks currently serving at the Supreme Court were with him at the DC Circuit, and now he's tipped the balance at the court for the first time with an all-female clerk class", she said.

He tried to distinguish between Mr Trump's nomination of Mr Kavanaugh this year and his own decision not to have the GOP-run Senate consider president Barack Obama's high court nominee, Merrick Garland, in 2016.

And on Monday evening he was the guest of honour at a ceremonial swearing-in at the White House. "The justices do not sit on opposite sides of an aisle".

"The Supreme Court is a team of nine. And a judge must interpret the Constitution as written, informed by history and tradition and precedent", Kavanaugh said.

On Wednesday, the only other day of arguments this week, the court will hear another two hours of arguments.

Arguments will resume Wednesday in separate cases, one involving the detention of undocumented immigrants.

Though he missed the court's first week, none of the six cases argued dealt with blockbuster issues. Kennedy, considered a conservative, was perceived as a swing vote on the court after siding with liberals on several crucial cases.

As the newest member of the court Kavanaugh will take on a few special jobs.

The appeals were brought by an environmental group and companies that supported the rule, which had limited hydrofluorocarbons used in a variety of products including spray cans and air conditioners. "The American public has seen this charade, has seen this dishonesty by the Democrats".
