Newspaper defends 'racist' Serena Williams cartoon

  • Artist Blasted for Racist Depiction of Serena Williams at U.S. Open

Serena Williams has been portrayed as an angry, overweight black baby in a cartoon in Australian newspaper The Herald Sun two days after the 23-time Grand Slam tennis champion lost her cool in a dramatic US Open final.

The cartoon shows Williams in the masculine look, big lipped, smashing the racquet on the floor whereas her Japanese competitor is seen standing in front of the referee who asks her can you let her win, referring to Serena Williams.

The caricature was published alongside unflattering cartoons of US President Donald Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un.

Knight's Twitter account appears to no longer be active.

Herald Sun editor Damon Johnston said in a statement Tuesday that Mark Knight's cartoon "had nothing to do with gender or race".

The paper's editor had previously tweeted his support for the cartoonist, while the artist himself said "the world has just gone insane".

While Osaka beat Williams in straight sets (6-2, 6-4), headlines did not focus on the 20-year-old's first ever major win, instead fixating on Williams' hat-trick of code violations.

"World's gone mad when cartoonist is targeted for saying tennis player spat the dummy-so sick of PC BS as too many confect an issue to be outraged about-that's what this is about".

An Australian newspaper has found itself at the centre of a race row over its cartoonist's depiction of Serena Williams and is doubling down on its support for the artist. "Ramos, effectively, had no choice but to dock her a point", Navratilova said.

Newsreader Sylvia Jeffreys said she struggled to form an opinion on the cartoon as she had not experienced racism herself.

The illustrator denied he is a bigot, saying he only wanted to show the tennis player's "poor behavior".

Some Twitter users, however, contested that the image was not racist. "Mr. Ramos' decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules and were re-affirmed by the U.S. Open's decision to fine Serena Williams for the three offenses".

Still, Knight has come under withering criticism over the cartoon with many calling the thick-lipped facial features a "mammy character" and "racist".

In response, umpires are reportedly threatening to boycott Williams' matches, as they feel that Ramos is being unfairly criticized for his conduct during the match, according to The Times of London.

"What we have is a bunch of people who get paid to publicly exercise their implied freedom to speech then whining when people disagree with what they have had the privilege of being paid to say", she added.
