  • No doubts anymore Novak Djokovic has returned to tennis elite

Novak Djokovic, of Serbia, returns a shot to Juan Martin del Potro, of Argentina, during the men's final of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018, in NY.

Novak Djokovic believes Juan Martin del Potro will be back on the big stage and winning grand slams after falling short in the final of the US Open on Sunday.

Del Potro, a sentimental favorite after nearly retiring in 2015 due to four wrist surgeries, couldn't overcome Djokovic's steely baseline game. The Serbian had to endure a dramatic 20-minute service game in which his opponent had three more break points but could not take them.

A visit to the court from tournament referee Brian Earley and grand slam supervisor Donna Kelso failed to diffuse the situation and, having led 3-1 in the second set, a rattled Williams lost it completely as she went down 4-3.

Juan Martin del Potro believes Novak Djokovic can end his career as the most successful Grand Slam title victor, surpassing Roger Federer's current mark of 20. Nadal, Federer and Djokovic last occupied the top three spots in the rankings in April 2015.

Injuries have derailed Del Potro's career but the Argentinian was back in a major decider, nine years after claiming the 2009 US Open.

The win at Flushing Meadows enabled Djokovic to complete a Wimbledon-US Open double after lifting his fourth Wimbledon title earlier this year at the All England Club in London.

"I'm very sad for being a loser today but Novak deserved to take the trophy", said Del Potro, who wept into his hands before being comforted by Djokovic.

"When I had my surgery I could truly understand what Juan Martin was going through when he had surgeries that kept him away form the tour for two or three years", added Djokovic.

Asked if he can catch Federer, Del Potro said: "Of course he can".

"I took the risks with my forehand because it was the only way to beat this kind of player". Here's a look at those who expressed congratulations to Djokovic.

Djokovic had tumbled down the rankings, slowed past year by an elbow injury and a loss of confidence that accompanied a 54-week title drought.

In their first meeting in a Grand Slam final it was Del Potro, back at this stage for the first time since 2009, who won the coin toss and elected to receive under the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof with heavy rain falling in NY.

The game went so long that when it ended, with Djokovic holding to 4-all, spectators began leaving their seats, perhaps thinking it was time for a changeover, even though it wasn't.

On the other hand, Del Potro was relying heavily on his serves and power.

"Difficult times but you learn from adversity".

Despite defeat, world number three Del Potro remained proud after an achievement he never thought would have been possible during his injury hell. 1 and 2, respectively, while Germany's Angelique Kerber climbed one place to 3.

And then came Sunday's pivotal game, a 20-minute, 22-point epic.

In the tiebreak, Del Potro looked susceptible to forehand errors and Djokovic showed enormous courage and quality to take it away from Del Potro, going up 2-0 in the final.
