Japan's Naomi Osaka has refused to criticise Serena Williams after her historic US Open victory was overshadowed by the American's furious row with the chair umpire.

"When you are little, you are taught not lo look when the opponent gets angry, you are told to turnaround and try and focus", said Osaka.

Chair umpires took centre stage at Flushing Meadows this year, more than at any other tournament in recent memory, and culminated with Serena Williams being reduced to tears at her treatment in the women's final. "I couldn't tell what was going on because it was just so loud". "There's no one more experienced, no one more knowledgeable, no one more capable as an umpire than Carlos Ramos". "The way Serena handled the situation, I think she handled it with such grace and class".

However, one senior figure told The Guardian that privately, there was widespread concern about how the USTA and WTA had rushed to support Williams - which had led to vitriol and abuse on social media for Ramos.

Williams was cited by Ramos for getting coaching signals; for breaking her racket, which automatically cost her a point because it was her second code violation of the match; and for calling Ramos a "thief," which cost her a game because it was her third code violation.

A former professional umpire has opened up about why officials are so furious after Serena Williams' US Open blow-up.

The incident has gobbled headlines all week, with some, such as Billie Jean King and USTA head Katrina Adams, saying tennis has a double standard in which men are not similarly punished for outbursts and others, such as Martina Navratilova and Mary Carillo, defending tennis's rules.

Williams was given a code violation warning during the final on September 8 when the umpire ruled that she was getting hand signals from her coach in the stands.

Portuguese newspaper Tribuna Expresso reported that Ramos had avoided walking the streets of NY on Sunday to avoid any "complicated situations".

"It's a delicate situation, but umpiring "a la carte" doesn't exist".

The umpiring community also had Ramos' back, as they have threatened to boycott Williams' matches.

"But if you were talking about my tennis, I think my tennis is not very Japanese".

One source, who has been privy to some of the discussions, said: "Umpires don't have any independent means of representation and are employed by the governing bodies".

He is expected to be on duty as planned for this week's Davis Cup semi-final in Zadar where Croatia are hosting the United States.
