British Airways has fallen victim to what it describes as a "very sophisticated" attack in which hackers stole financial data relating to hundreds of thousands of customers.
The holding company International Airlines Group, which includes British Airways, is conducting an urgent investigation.
The breach has been resolved and our website is working normally. But hackers were able to access customers' names, email addresses and credit card information, according to law enforcement authorities in the United Kingdom.
Mark Adams, Regional Vice President of UK & Ireland, Veeam, noted that the fact British Airways reported the breach so quickly is a positive.
The airline said it was investigating the theft that happened between August 21 and September 5. "I blocked my card straight away, went to the bank and they said it's ridiculous that BA have allowed this to happen".
"Nevertheless, we encourage clients to immediately contact us should they notice any unusual or unauthorized activity on their accounts and credit cards", spokesman Jeff Lanthier wrote in an email.
He said: "On the positive side, companies are highly incented to improve the level of security monitoring they perform". Back in July, BA formally apologized after dozens of flights were canceled, and in June, 2,000 British Airways passengers had their tickets canceled because the ticket prices were too low.
"There's still nothing from BA, even though it's clear they know every transaction during that period was involved and there's no other reason for the payment".
To make matters worse, if BA is verified not to have taken appropriate measures to secure customer data, it can face a fine of up to $650 million due to the infamous GDPR regulation in place.
The airline was roundly criticised for its handling of a power failure in May previous year which resulted in thousands of flight disruptions and cancellations. Passport information, the company thankfully confirms, was not included.
