Papadopoulos has cooperated for more than a year with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the United States presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.
Papadopoulos, a young oil and gas consultant, was the first Trump official to plead guilty and cooperate in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US election.
Papadopoulos, who was initially interrogated on January 27, 2017 by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents regarding his work for the Trump campaign, was arrested at Washington-Dulles International Airport on July 27, 2017 and arraigned the following day.
Papadopoulos learned his fate Friday in federal court in Washington.
J.D. Gordon, former National Security Adviser for the Trump campaign, echoed similar sentiments, while blasting the Mueller probe.
Papadopolous will also have 12 months of supervised release, serve 200 hours of community service within about a year and will be fined $9,500.
U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss ordered the incarceration, saying that he couldn't avoid imposing prison time given the gravity of the investigation.
They said Papadopoulos's initial lies hindered investigators' ability to effectively question, challenge or detain Joseph Mifsud, the London professor who had contacted him.
They said prosecutors have not provided any proof that Papadopoulos "actually harmed the investigation as alleged".
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday afternoon, Trump distanced himself from Papadopoulos.
Before the sentencing, his lawyer, Thomas Breen, told the court about how Trump had blasted the investigation as "fake news" and a "witch hunt" before Papadopolous met with the FBI and lied.
The lawyers argued Papadopoulos lied as he was influenced by the President's aggressive sentiments on the probe. "I can't guarantee. All I can say is, my memory is telling me that I never shared it with anyone on the campaign". "I saw him sitting in one picture at a table with me - that's the only thing I know about him", he said, an apparently reference to a March 31, 2016, campaign meeting that Papadopoulos and Trump attended.
Papadopoulos was arrested more than a year ago and pleaded guilty to lying to investigators about his contacts with several people connected to Russian Federation during the campaign. His lawyers said Papadopoulos had suggested brokering a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2016 and that Trump "nodded with approval", according to a court filing last month.
"We don't talk politics", he said.
The court filing also suggested that both Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions approved of his outreach to Moscow, contradicting Sessions' sworn testimony.
The memo went on to say that Papadopoulos was "ashamed and remorseful", but he did not always seem that way on social media.
President Donald Trump and his allies have repeatedly downplayed Papadopoulos' role on the campaign.
Van der Zwaan, a Dutch lawyer who worked with Manafort and Gates, was also convicted of lying to prosecutors.
