  • Off-duty Texas police officer shoots man after mistaking apartment as her own

It's not clear what the officer may have said to 26-year-old Botham Jean between entering his home and shooting him late Thursday, police Chief U. Renee Hall said during a news conference.

Jean was shot by the uniformed police officer who "fired her weapon striking the victim", according to a police report.

Paramedics arrived on the scene about four minutes later and took Jean to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The police officer made the fatal error after she mistakenly entered Jean's apartment.

The officer, who was not injured, was placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of a joint investigation by Dallas police and the local district attorney, the statement said.

Jean's mother was incredulous when hearing the news that her son had been gunned down by a police officer in his own home.

Officials added that the officer in question was being tested for drugs and alcohol. The door to the apartment was unlocked.

Two women said they heard a commotion around 10 they studied Thursday. "He's a bachelor. Things are different inside", she said.

Friends of Jean's have taken to social media leaving their thoughts, prayers and well wishes for friends and family of the young man.

Authorities said they are awaiting family notification before releasing the victim's name.

The officer involved in the shooting was not hurt.

Jean graduated from Harding University in 2016, and he is remembered by classmates as a friendly, "all around great person" who always had a smile on his face.

Sgt. Warren Mitchell didn't offer an explanation for how the situation led to the shooting, saying: "I won't go into that information right now".

Botham is a former student of Harding University.
