Per the National Weather Service, Tropical Storm Gordon is at press time off Florida's west coast and expected to make landfall at the Mississippi/Louisiana coast early Wednesday.

The storm made landfall just west of the Alabama-Mississippi border about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center said, with a maximum sustained wind speed of 70 miles per hour. A slow-moving storm system early next week sets up the best chance of a good soaking rain we've had in quite a while.

Gordon is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 2 to 4 inches over portions of western MS, southern and western Arkansas, and from western to northern Missouri into adjacent parts of IL with isolated maximum amounts of 6 inches through early Saturday. Flash Flood Watches are in effect for portions of Arkansas beginning at 7 PM Tonight and continuing through at least 7 AM Friday. Siding was peeled off some houses, but Mayor Jeff Collier said "for the most part, we did OK". The Escambia County Sheriff's office posted on its Facebook page that responding deputies discovered that the child had been killed. No severe weather expected, but very heavy rainfall and localized flooding will be possible through the weekend.

More than 27,000 customers were without power as Gordon began pushing ashore, mostly in coastal Alabama and the western tip of the Florida Panhandle around Pensacola, with a few hundred in southeastern Mississippi. It wasn't almost as bad as when Nate, the last hurricane to strike the USA, came ashore last October in nearby Biloxi, Mississippi.

A storm surge covered barrier islands as the storm blew through, and some inland roadways were flooded as well.

Gordon strengthens, expected to hit Gulf Coast as hurricane
The National Hurricane Center said it is way too early to know if either of those storms would have any effect on land. The National Hurricane Center is predicting a "life-threatening" storm surge along parts of the central Gulf Coast.

"Fortunately we had some power crews staged in Hattiesburg, Ms, early afternoon yesterday, so the utility companies will be working together to getting peoples power restored back as quickly as possible".

On the Mississippi Gulf Coast, 12 casinos that were ordered closed Tuesday were given permission Wednesday to open at noon.

However, despite that good news, Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for AAA and the Auto Club Group, offered a warning about the impact a major storm can have on oil production and gas prices. 2-3 inches of rain is likely over the Tri-State with heavier amounts in our far northern counties.

"It's the peak of hurricane season", Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said.
