  • Rafael Nadal is targeting his 18th Grand Slam title

Nadal, a three-time U.S. Open champion, had lost to Thiem in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open in May, but pummeled him in a lopsided French Open final in June.

In a gripping 4-hour 49-minute contest which concluded at 2.04am on Wednesday, world number one Nadal won through to keep his bid for a fourth title in NY and 18th Grand Slam crown on track.

Anderson was hoping to earn a rematch with Nadal, who beat him past year in the South African's first Grand Slam final. It was a step forward for me in the dynamic of the tournament. So when you are back, you always appreciate the things that happen. Unfortunately one had to win.

Tennis. US Open. 1/four finals.

"To be honest, I am very, very sorry for Dominic", he added. In 2010, Kei Nishikori beat Marin Cilic in the first round in 4:59 by a score of 5-7, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-1. But the last time, against Philipp Kohlschreiber in Miami last spring, he fought back to win the match.

Both will be hot favourites in their matches, with Djokovic facing Portugal's Joao Sousa before Federer takes on John Millman of Australia in the night session.

Nadal said: "Two matches in a row very tough ones.

I don't think there's any change with her game", Pliskova said. He is a close friend on tour and a great player. He's a fighter. He has a great attitude.

Dominic Thiem crushed Rafael Nadal's challenge in the opening set subjugating him 6-0 and the Austrian tried to impose his authority in the second set as well but the Spaniard proved too much for him and won the set 6-4.

It was his 58th unforced error on a night when he sent down 18 aces and fired 74 winners.

US Open 2018: Roger Federer knocked out by Australian John Millman
As Federer's serving went from bad to worse, Millman - who was growing in confidence - immediately broke again to level the match. "Millman's first top ten victory lands him a spot in the QF against Djokovic", tweeted US Open's official Twitter handle.

"It was not on my mind, but I was pretty close a year ago", Thiem said. The Spaniard finally found his range in the second set, he couldn't dictate the points but he at least started to win points on his serve easily, getting broken once but scoring two breaks for a 6-4.

"Tennis is sometimes cruel, this game didn't deserve a loser but there has to be one and, if we skip the first set, we were well matched from start to finish", he noted. "But there has to be one".

Nadal moves to 8-3 all time against the Austrian to set up a semifinal match against No. 3 seed Juan Martín del Potro on Friday.

Thiem broke three times in a 24-minute first set on Tuesday, handing Nadal just his third "bagel" at a Grand Slam.

"Sad for him because when arrive this moment, he did all the things well to win the match", Nadal said of Thiem. Nadal was unable to break the rival's rhythm and he found himself 5-0 down after just 20 minutes following another break from Thiem in game five. Indeed, when Johnson won the third set to take a 2-1 lead, Thiem looked to be in trouble.

The 33-year-old Isner is the tournament leader in aces and was nailing them against Raonic with 140 miles per hour serves.

It was the first still moment in almost five hours of epic, smash-ball, anything-you-can-hit-I-can-hit-harder tennis. "Beating John in these kind of matches is like an epic, an epic match".

"We fought the whole match and I survived with my serve which was key".

"Well, I want to just be able to get past the semis here".
