  • Nadal advances to face Thiem in U.S. Open quarterfinals

Nadal had to work hard for the third set, which he won 7-5, but saw the game tied to 2-2 after losing the fourth set 7-6 to Dominic Thiem. "The conditions were tough, very humid for me".

"I don't think he's really sorry", said Thiem with a smile. "He's a close friend on tour, a great guy and I wish him the very best".

Nadal had defeated Thiem in the Roland Garros final in June but this was their first meeting away from a clay court.

Rafael Nadal, who is ranked world number one, stormed his way into the semi-final of the ongoing US Open on Wednesday after overpowering Austria's Domenic Thiem in a fierce encounter played at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Del Potro, champion in 2009, got an early break to go 3-1 up in the first before Coric fought back to level at 4-4, converting the only break point he carved out in the match. For the match, he hit 74 winners and 18 aces and stole six break points to Nadal's five.

Ninth seed Thiem became the first player since Andy Roddick in 2004 to win a love set against Nadal in NY but the defending champion once again dug deep to come out on top of a gruelling battle played in more punishing humidity.

It was only the fourth time in his long grand slam history that Nadal had lost a set 6-0 and just the third time at any level in almost seven years.

"Forget about this start and I just tried to win a couple of points and a couple of games".

And when quizzed on what he was thinking after being bageled in the opening set, Nadal said: "Wake up, that's all".

After Nadal roared back to take a 2-1 lead, the fourth set went to a tiebreak. "It's going to be stuck in my mind", he said.

"It's cruel sometimes tennis, because I think this match didn't really deserve a loser". But there has to be one. "He made one more point than me".

Nadal, who lost the first set, pocketed the thrilling tie 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7, 7-6. That was wrapped up in just 24 minutes with Nadal winning only seven points. Under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium, Nadal and Thiem delivered the NY crowd another memorable marathon, this time for a spot in the US Open semifinals. The 36-year-old secured a semi-final berth after defeating Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the quarter-final match. "It means a lot to me". I don't want to lose against anybody. I started to find my rhythm and then the match became more equal. I think we nearly all the time have great matches.

For the second night in a row, the end of The Tennis Podcast had to be recorded at past 2am in NY in order to cover the thrilling events of the US Open night session.
