Asked in the Bloomberg News interview whether he would comply if Mueller issued a subpoena for him to appear for questioning, Trump said, "I'll see what happens".

In the interview, Trump gave a token indication Sessions' fate wasn't sealed.

At a rally in IN on Thursday night, Trump turned up the rhetoric, threatening to "get involved" in the work of the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation unless the agencies "start doing their job".

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions hosts a roundtable discussion with foreign liaison officers from the Joint Interagency Task Force-South (JIATF-S) at the Justice Department in Washington, U.S., August 29, 2018.

But despite Trump's unhappiness with Sessions, when asked if he would keep him employed past midterms, Bloomberg reports, Trump declined to answer. Though they once cautioned him that dismissing Sessions would feed special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Trump's potential obstruction of justice, these people say, Trump's legal team has become increasingly convinced Mueller will make that case regardless of whether the president fires Sessions or leaves him in place... Several aides said Graham is annoyed with Sessions because he opposes a criminal justice reform bill he supports.

"I think he should stay exactly where he is", McConnell said.

Wallace said, "Remember though, that the recusal of Sessions did not lead to the special counsel".

"[He] never took control of the Justice Department and it's a sort of an incredible thing", Trump continued. He charged that Mr Mueller's probe was "highly conflicted" and that "real corruption goes untouched".

Senator Lindsey Graham, who is close to Trump and a defender of Sessions, said last week he believed Trump would appoint a new attorney general but should wait until the elections, in which Republicans are seeking to maintain control of both the House of Representatives and Senate.

Some Republicans in Congress who have defended Sessions have made room for the president's intense criticisms.
