  • Super Typhoon Jebi on Friday

At least six people have reportedly died after Japan was hit by its strongest typhoon in 25 years.

Evacuation orders have been issued in some areas of Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hyogo, Kagawa, Ehime and Wakayama prefectures.

Local media said more than a million households were left without power by the storm, and evacuation advisories were issued for almost 1.2 million people, though only another 16,000 were under stronger - though still not mandatory - evacuation orders.

Evacuation advisories were issued for more than 300,000 people as the wind and rain from Typhoon Jebi began to intensify on Tuesday afternoon.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe cancelled a scheduled trip to Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island, to oversee the government's response to the typhoon, said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.

In early July, torrential rains battered western Japan, triggering landslides and floods that left 226 dead and 10 missing - the country's deadliest weather-related disaster in more than three decades.

Toyko has remained largely unscathed from the storm but will face high winds and heavy rain.

Packing winds of up to 216km/h, Jebi is now hovering near Anan city in Tokushima Prefecture.

Typhoon No. 21 landed in the southern part of Tokushima Prefecture in the Shikoku region around noon.

He stressed that he wanted to improve relations with the neighbouring countries, including India. Zarif started his tour of Pakistan on Thursday.

Ferocious winds are forecast for west and east Japan through September 5, while the sea between Shikoku island and the Tokai region is expected to be extremely rough.

Based on its wind speeds, Jebi was classified as "very strong" by Japan's weather agency.

Domestic airlines canceled over 700 local and worldwide flights mainly scheduled to depart and arrive in airports in western and central Japan.

Some companies recommended their employees to work from home on Tuesday.

Universal Studios Japan in Osaka shut down along with factories for several large manufacturers, including vehicle maker Toyota.

Universal Studios Japan, a popular amusement park near Osaka, was closed. "But for the safety of our visitors, we made a decision to close today", Hiromi Kamiguchi, a spokeswoman for Nijo Castle, a UNESCO world heritage site, said Tuesday morning.

Some parts are likely to see up to 300mm of rain fall in a 24 hour period with winds gusting up to 216 kilometres per hour.

It is the first typhoon to land on Japan with a maximum sustained wind speed of 44 meters or more per second since the 13th typhoon of 1993, according to the agency.
