Manafort Trial Defense Chips Away at Credibility of Star Witness Gates

  • Paul Manafort's associate says 'hundreds' of emails prove former Trump campaign chief directed fraud

She said Manafort's passport was used to open many of them in US dollars, euros and British pounds.

Melinda James, a banker who testified earlier Thursday, said Manafort had described the property's ownership as split between him, his wife and his daughter Jessica, who was then married to Jeff Yohai, now her now-ex-husband.

He also accused the special counsel of having unfettered power, something he sought to cure by limiting prosecutors' references to Mr. Trump or Russian collusion in the Manafort case.

Prosecutors have pointed out that Manafort listed the Manhattan loft as a rental on his tax returns in previous years.

Downing wondered aloud why Gates had shown "perfect recollection" during examination by the government but was now much less precise under cross-examination by Manafort's defence. She reached out to Manafort and Gates repeatedly for clarity, and they assured the bank several times that their documents were correct.

He said if Ellis feels that negatively about the prosecution, then he should keep those feelings to himself or he shouldn't be on the case.

In testimony Tuesday, Gates laid responsibility squarely at Manafort's feet for a series of crimes, saying the two had committed crimes together by stashing money in foreign bank accounts and falsifying bank loan documents.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's team is reportedly asking Judge T.S. Ellis, who is overseeing the trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, to tell the jury he crossed the line by attacking prosecutors.

Prosecutor Greg Andres addressed the defence lawyer's questions about whether the special counsel's office had tried to coach Gates on how to testify.

Prosecutor Uzo Asonye asked if Manafort would have qualified for the loan if he had known DMP's profit for that year was in fact $400,000.

Paul Manafort lied about the status of his two properties in NY in order to fraudulently obtain a $3.4 million loan, according to testimony Thursday. Gates said it was a mistake a decade ago that he regretted.

But what was really striking was what Jack Dorsey and the Twitter Safety team went on to say about the general principles regarding fake news and conspiracy theories on the platform.

Magionos testified that she reviewed 31 accounts tied to Manafort in Cyprus, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the United Kingdom, and Manafort was listed as the beneficial owner on at least some of them.

The case against Manafort has little to do with either man's work for the Trump campaign and there's been no discussion during the trial about whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russian Federation - the central question Mueller's team has tried to answer.

The judge's comments on the eighth day of the trial were in response to a written filing by prosecutors arguing that Ellis should instruct the jury that he made an error in admonishing them during the Wednesday testimony of IRS agent Michael Welch. Prosecutors had previously said that Manafort's interactions with Calk were the only part of the trial expected to overlap with his Trump campaign role.

Gates acknowledged that he did for two months and that he took first-class flights and stayed in "fancy hotels" around Europe, but said the money came from bonuses rather than illicit gains.

"I may have made a mistake".

The 46-year-old, who has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is cooperating with the government, began the day by describing how he helped Manafort evade U.S. taxes on millions of dollars earned from political consulting work they did in Ukraine.

"The idea of exchanging income for loans reduced his overall tax liability", Gates said.

Neither man was charged in connection with their Trump campaign work, but the trial has nonetheless been closely watched by a president who insists Manafort was treated shabbily and who continues to fume publicly about Mueller's investigation into potential ties between his associates and the Kremlin.

Prosecutors say Manafort misrepresented his debts to Citizens Bank when securing the $3.4 million mortgage, and ultimately obtained the mortgage by attesting that the other property had no mortgages.

"No you weren't", Judge Ellis said. He poked fun at himself Wednesday as he haggled with the attorneys for 20 minutes over the number and type of charts prosecutors could present during the testimony of the Federal Bureau of Investigation forensic accountant. "I'm not very patient, so don't try my patience", Ellis said.
