  • Moscow appoints action star Steven Seagal special envoy on Russia-US humanitarian ties

Steven Seagal has been named Moscow's envoy to the United States for "humanitarian ties", the Russian Foreign Ministry announced Saturday. 'I have worked tirelessly in this direction for many years unofficially and I am now very grateful for the opportunity to do the same thing officially'.

The American actor was granted Russian citizenship in 2016 and is said to enjoy a friendly relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Seagal received Russian citizenship back in 2016, where he's been outspoken in his defence of Putin, even calling him a "great, great, great world leader, maybe, the greatest".

Seagal attended the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation last month and was also among the guests when Putin was sworn in for a fourth term in May.

The only missing piece to complete the transfers is the player's signatures which is simply a formality. By all accounts, this is a done deal.

The position is unpaid, said Russian officials, who compared the role to that of a U.N. goodwill ambassador - a distinguished volunteer who calls attention to the work of the United Nations.

Relations between Russian Federation and the U.S. have soured over allegations that Moscow interfered in the 2016 United States presidential race, which Russian Federation repeatedly denies. Seagal is not getting paid for his new job, but he'll be tasked with deepening cultural, art and youth ties between the two countries. Seagal says: "I'll never, ever falter". Also that year, California Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher credited Seagal with facilitating meetings for a congressional delegation that visited Russian Federation in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings to investigate the suspects' backgrounds and discuss intelligence sharing issues.

President Putin is also a fan of the kind of martial arts that Seagal often practiced in his Hollywood action movies. He's a close friend and staunch supporter of Putin, whom he has hailed as a "great world leader".

In March of this year, two women who previously accused Steven Seagal of rape and sexual assault stepped forward to offer more detailed accounts of the actor's alleged misconduct.
