A 6.9-magnitude natural disaster struck Indonesia, sparking a tsunami warning that was later canceled, officials said.

"I was watching TV when I felt a big shake", said Harian, a Lombok woman who uses one name.

An Australian tourist who felt the impact of the deadly Indonesian quake has described the scenes of panic and chaos as he and his partner attempted to find their way out of their Bali hotel.

"We were pretty lucky to get out", he said.

The powerful quake triggered panic among tourists and residents, and was also felt on the neighbouring holiday island of Bali.

The latest quake had a magnitude of seven and struck just 10 km underground according to the US Geological Survey.

"Walls cracked, it was quite impossible to stand up", he said. "Heard screams", he wrote. "Lots of cracks, fallen doors", he wrote on Facebook.

"People panicked and scattered on the streets and buildings and houses that had been damaged by the previous natural disaster had become more damaged and collapsed", Sutopo said.

"Came out, and made my way down a staircase, while building was still shaking".

Bali's worldwide airport suffered damage to its terminal but the runway was unaffected and operations had returned to normal, disaster agency officials said.

The area continued to be rattled by aftershocks from the quake, which occurred days after a 6.4 tremor hit Lombok on July 29, killing 14 people and injuring 162 people.

"I think for a lot of people, in particular some of the other delegates there at the conference, they hadn't experienced an quake before and it was pretty terrifying and because we were at the top of the building it was shaking a lot, a lot of things falling over".

The Malaysian embassy says those in Lombok as well as students in Bali are safe following the natural disaster which hit yesterday evening.

About 1,000 foreign and domestic tourists were evacuated in boats from the three Gili islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, BNPB spokesman Nugroho said via Twitter. Hotels and other buildings in both locations are not allowed to exceed the height of coconut trees.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

In 2014, a devastating tsunami triggered by a magnitude 9.3 undersea quake off the coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia killed 220,000 people in countries around the Indian Ocean, including 168,000 in Indonesia.
