The United States has told other countries they must halt imports of Iranian oil starting in early November or face USA financial measures.

The outburst relates to Iran's 2015 agreement with the United States and five other countries, promising to abandon its nuclear ambitions in exchange for a loosening of economic sanctions, including restrictions on Tehran's oil exports, its principal revenue generator.

He noted that Washington is ready to move to Tehran, but it "requires huge changes in the Iranian regime". That's what America is trying to get Iran to stop doing.

But Iran did not appear interested in drawing attention to them.

Supporters of the Iran agreement have long argued that the US departure would alienate European allies who partnered with the U.S.in the negotiations.

The U.S. also has banned imports of Iranian products such as carpets and pistachios and revoked licenses that allowed Iran to purchase U.S. and European aircraft.

But before that, the last time a sitting USA president actually met with an Iranian leader was before the revolution when Jimmy Carter met with the Shah of Iran. Representatives of the administration trump says that the sanctions resume "in an attempt to change the behavior of the Iranian regime".

On July 31, IRGC chief Mohammad Ali Jafari had dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump's tentative offer of talks with Tehran, saying Iran was not like North Korea. The sanctions targeting Iran's oil industry could cut off a crucial source of hard currency.

Though the United States sanctions post-deal will be unilateral and not as strong as the pre-deal UN-imposed sanctions, fear angering the USA, the world's largest economy, will likely scare off Europeans who are otherwise committed to the deal.

In some cities like Shiraz riot police forces used tear gas to push back protesters, according to Radio Zamaneh.

Speaking to reporters aboard his plane on his way home from Asia, Pompeo says Monday's re-imposition of sanctions is an important pillar in USA policy toward Iran.

On Aug. 7, Washington will reimpose sanctions on Iran's purchase of USA dollars, its trade in gold and precious metals and its dealings with metals, coal and industrial-related software.

On Saturday, a man taking part in a protest in Karaj in the northern province of Alborz was fatally shot, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.

The president also issued an all-caps threat to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani last month, warning him not to threaten the USA or "YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE".
