"If you want to clean up your air, they throw federalism right out the window, I've had it with the so-called pro-business conservatives who ignore what actual industry leaders say is best for business".

But there's enough lead time, with their freezing it at 2020 levels. "We urge California and the federal government to find a common sense solution that sets continued increases in vehicle efficiency standards while also meeting the needs of America's drivers". A lot of what they're referring to is whether it's the national standard or a state-based standard, whether we allow states to create their own standards. In our federalist system, California and other states should be able to experiment with what is permissible on their roadways.

"The source of the safety benefits from the analysis for this proposed rule is getting folks into affordable, more fuel-efficient, cleaner, safer cars", King told reporters.

If California chooses to set stricter standards, other states can follow; 14 states and D.C. have adopted California's standards so far.

Ultimately, the two agencies published Thursday's proposal jointly, and acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler publicly defended the proposal during testimony Wednesday before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

Jeff Alson, a former policy adviser for the EPA office of transportation and air quality in Ann Arbor, has worked on vehicle emissions for 40 years at the agency.

Citing safety, the Trump administration on Thursday proposed rolling back car-mileage standards, backing away from years of government efforts to cut Americans' trips to the gas station and reduce unhealthy, climate-changing tailpipe emissions.

Gina McCarthy, thes EPA administrator under Obama, said the reversal of these standards "run contrary to sound science and the law".

I know that these guys are awesome professionals and I know that they give everything for the club, for the prestige of the club. So, I think we have fantastic players, but, of course, always managers want to improve their teams, but it's not my business.

Those states argue the Clean Air Act empowers them to keep the Obama-era fuel economy standards in place in their markets.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said on Twitter that "The #Trump Administration has launched a brazen attack, no matter how it is cloaked, on our nation's #CleanCarStandards".

The Obama administration set the standards in 2012, calling for the average miles-per-gallon for cars to increase to 41.7 in 2020 models and to 54.5 in 2025 models.

Reforming Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards is a huge tax cut for American auto buyers, up to a $7,200 per vehicle.

The administration also projects the efficiency rules would drive up the price of cars enough to push some buyers out of the market, leaving them to remain in older vehicles lacking life-saving new technologies like assisted braking and blind spot warning.

"This has to be absolutely one of the most harmful and dumbest actions that the EPA has taken", said Healey of MA, one of the attorneys general from 19 states and the District of Columbia objecting to the change. "The administration is using a parade of horrors to justify an extreme rollback", said the Safe Climate Campaign. And when they fail they are prohibitively expensive to fix and often require someone akin to a rocket scientist to troubleshoot.

Most automakers haven't had time to react to the proposal, but Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said the "proposed rule recognizes that assumptions made in 2012 about consumer preferences have fundamentally shifted in 2018".
