Skipper Joe Root had top scored with a fluent 80 but his run out from a brilliant throw by Kohli led to their demise.

The day certainly belonged to Kohli, whose dogged determination for a course correction was evident during an innings where he scored more than fifty percent of his team's runs even as he was booed by England fans for his version of "mic drop" celebrations on the first day.

India were in bother at 182-8 but Kohli shepherded the strike expertly and led his side to 274 all out, trailing by just 13 on first innings. With India bundling out for 287, Ravichandran Ashwin sent Alastair Cook packing early on just before stumps and will look to carry on the same momentum.

With India suffering a collapse to rival England's from the previous day - losing five wickets for 50 runs - Kohli once again showed his skill with a fantastic century. "The scene was set, it was Anderson versus Kohli and it would have been Anderson's day had Dawid Malan held onto that catch in the slips when Kohli was on 21". At the end of the day, India were unable to complete the chase but Virat Kohli's 141 was a clear indication of his brand of cricket.

That's not to say Kohli was making light of the hard slog at Edgbaston: "I am very happy". The experienced spinner bowled some hard lines to the England batters which resulted in the quick wickets. He found that partner in Hardik Pandya, who he added 48 runs with for the sixth wicket.

"Personally, it was obviously a pretty special day for me with the ball", said Curran.

Real Madrid 'end Hazard interest' after Chelsea demand world-record fee
Willian's role at Real Madrid would be one of support from the bench, offering pace and directness in the latter stages of games. And while the European champions are big admirers of the Belgian, new boss Julen Lopetegui feels he already has enough options.

Interestingly, Vinod Kambli became nostalgic after watching Virat Kohli celebrate his ton and reminisced his playing days. "Credit to great innings there".

Bairstow played on to paceman Umesh Yadav for 70, trying to cut a ball that was too close to him.

Then new England vice-captain Jos Buttler was lbw for a second-ball duck, pushing forward to Ashwin - and after Ben Stokes poked a catch back at the off-spinner, it was left to Curran and Adil Rashid to limit the damage.

Kohli, one of the outstanding batsmen of his generation, managed just 134 runs in five Tests at an average of 13.4 on his maiden tour of England four years ago.

He continued to punish the England bowlers to notch up 22 boundaries and a six during his 225-ball knock.

Two balls later Curran dismissed KL Rahul for four via an ugly flat-bat drag-on. "It's a five-match series and Virat has got off to a flyer with 149 and great players once they get into rhythm, once they get into form and once they get into confidence, they are very hard to stop".
