  • UN peacekeepers return after 4 years to Israel-occupied Golan Heights near Syria

On Monday, the pro-Assad coalition in Syria finally finished off the last pockets of Islamist resistance along the Israeli border on the Golan Heights after a six-week-long campaign which included the "liberation" of the Daraa and Kuneitra provinces in southwest Syria.

Iranian forces have withdrawn their heavy weapons in Syria to a distance of 85 km from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, TASS quoted a Russian envoy as saying on Wednesday, but Israel deemed the pullback inadequate.

He said the Russian presence there was temporary, and that the observation posts would be handed over to Syrian regime forces once the situation stabilized.

An Israeli air strike has killed seven militants believed to be linked to the Islamic State group and seeking to infiltrate the country from the Syrian Golan Heights, the army said Thursday.

In a separate development, according to media reports, Russian Federation is planning to deploy military police on the Golan Heights frontier between Syria and Israel and set up eight observation posts.

President Bashar al-Assad's sweeping away of rebels in southwestern Syria has anxious Israel, which last week downed a Syrian warplane that it said breached a Golan buffer zone and warned Iranian forces backing him against deploying there.

Col. Gen. Sergei Rudskoy of the Russian General Staff said conditions have been created for the resumption of United Nations peacekeeping patrols along the area separating Syria and Israel.

"In Syria, as far as we are concerned, the situation is returning to the previous one before the civil war-meaning there is a clear address, there is responsibility and there is a central government", Lieberman said while touring northern Israel.

ISIL and its affiliated Khaled Bin Al Waleed group still control pockets in southern Syria, as well as some western areas, close to the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Russian Federation announced Thursday that it would deploy military police and place monitoring posts on the Golan Heights to prevent further confrontations.

Israel has been blamed for previous attacks on a suspected Iranian military base in the el-Kisweh area.

Israel has sought to avoid direct involvement in the Syrian conflict but acknowledges carrying out dozens of airstrikes there to stop what it says are deliveries of advanced weaponry to Hezbollah.

The Israeli military confirmed a strike against what it called "armed terror operatives" but it did not give any details on casualties.

There was no immediate Syrian government response to the border clashes reported by Jordan and Syria on Thursday.

ISIL fighters have been staging attacks in southwestern Syria, as they face an offensive by troops loyal to Syria's President Bashar al-Assad.
