Under mounting pressure, Ohio State placed Meyer on paid administrative leave while it investigates whether he or his wife knew about allegations of domestic abuse against former Buckeyes assistant Zach Smith.

Urban Meyer could even be throwing his wife under the bus, since as a university employee herself she would be required under Ohio State's Title IX sexual misconduct policy to report any allegation of domestic violence against someone who works at the school.

Meyer said he and athletic director Gene Smith agree that being on leave during the inquiry was best for the investigation and the team.

"I can't say. I don't know", he said.

Football practice starts on Friday, with offensive coordinator Ryan Day serving as the interim coach.

Courtney Smith told Stadium, a sports network, that she told Meyer's wife in 2015 about the alleged domestic violence. It is not clear what contact Meyer had, if any, with university officials about the situation until Smith was sacked last month. It's unfortunate that the guy (Zach Smith) was allowed to be on the staff for that long a period of time.

The pair attended the Met Gala together in 2017, and are said to have stayed in touch after becoming close a year ago . Earlier this year, they walked on the Met Gala red carpet, making everyone wonder whether they are dating.

Meyer said he was aware of an incident involving Zach and Courtney Smith in 2009, while they were still married.

Urban said if he had, Zach would've been fired.

Smith was sacked July 23 after reports surfaced that his ex-wife filed an order of protection against him. As the Buckeyes played that season under interim coach Luke Fickell, the only story line that mattered was Ohio State's six-month courtship of Meyer, who was sitting out the season to hit the reset button on his health and career after "retiring" from Florida.

This is a he-said, she-said case and Urban did nothing wrong, they say.

"All the [coaches'] wives knew", Courtney Smith told Brett McMurphy, a college football reporter laid off by ESPN previous year who posted the story on his Facebook page. And again, we don't know how much Meyer knew, though it seems likely that his wife was aware of the incidents - Courtney showed McMurphy a text in which Shelley said Zach "scares" her. "That was one rule I had that there was no negotiating on". The Smiths are due in court in September and their lawyers did not respond to messages seeking comment Thursday. "I was never told about anything and nothing ever came to light". "I don't know. Someone texted me that last night. I'm not sure where that comes up".
