  • Zimbabwe election results Could the opposition party win

Mr Chamisa of the MDC is a 40-year-old lawyer with little experience in governance, having served only a short stint as minister some years ago.

A presidential poll will be held on Saturday, September 8, if a candidate does not secure more than 50 percent of the vote, but it will probably take a couple of days before the results of the presidential election have come in. Numerous protesters tried to get into the National Results Centre (NRC).

"There is no way that ZANU-PF will accept an MDC victory".

"The longer it lasts that the results of the presidential election is not known, the more lack of credibility it provides", he said.

The Zimbabwe army has been seen trying to dispell protesters.

Members of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party are claiming that the elections have been rigged.

Automatic gunfire has also been heard and an army helicopter has been spotted in the skies.

A soldier fires shots towards demonstrators, on August 1 2018, in Harare, as protests erupted over alleged fraud in the country's election. A spokesperson says that "we are seriously meant to wonder that this means". "Now is the time for responsibility and above all, peace".

Biti cited his own constituency, Harare East, as an example, saying despite the fact that they finished the whole process at 3am, ZEC had not pushed the results to the constituency command centre.

Police fire tear gas to disperse stone-throwing opposition supporters.

It is also reported they have fired water cannons.

General Motors had slashed its outlook, and shares of Ford and auto parts companies had fallen. Juncker told Trump during a meeting in the Oval Office that the trade talks are important.

Supporters of Chamisa's MDC party have blocked streets and burned tyres.

The electoral commission had said it would start announcing results for the presidential race from 12.30pm but election officials said they would announce the results from Thursday.

The opposition alleges the elections have irregularities, saying voting results were not posted outside one-fifth of polling stations as required by law.

Elmar Brok, head of the European Union observer mission, said there were "many shortcomings" in the election, but it was unclear whether they influenced the results.

The MDC broke into factions after the death in February of its veteran leader Morgan Tsvangirai as his deputies battled over who his successor should be.

The presidential results are yet to be announced. We have won the popular vote.

Pfigu said he was optimistic on election day for the country's first vote without Mugabe, who ruled for almost four decades, on the ballot.

On his official Twitter feed, Chamisa accused the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission of releasing the parliamentary results first to prepare Zimbabweans for a Mnangagwa victory.

Meanwhile, President Mnangagwa has tweeted that he was "positive" about the results and urged Zimbabweans to patiently wait for the final announcement.

Now, almost 48 hours after polls closed, voters still await an official answer about who won the country's presidential election - and suspicion of electoral wrongdoing has gathered intensity in the capital city's streets.

Live images from Harare show MDC supporters taking to the streets with noise-makers, flags and banners. A foreign ministry spokesman "noted" reports of Wednesday's violence.
