  • Koch network makes an example of GOP candidate in key Senate race by pulling support

Top officials with the donor network affiliated with billionaire industrialist Charles Koch this weekend sought to distance the network from the Republican Party and President Trump, citing tariff and immigration policies and "divisive" rhetoric out of Washington.

But as Trump has sought to pull his party toward more protectionist trade positions, backers of free trade policies like the Koch network have been reluctant to provide support. Trump captured North Dakota by almost 36 percentage points in 2016, and toppling the nine other Democratic senators are up for re-election in Trump states would expand the GOP's hold on the Senate. Yet there is a desire for the Kochs to co-operate with Trump allies in other states, such as Nevada and Montana, where Republican candidates are considered more vulnerable. "The success of the tax cuts and the importance of the Supreme Court energizes GOP donors to keep the Senate in Republican hands".

What's more, he claimed in a second tweet to have made the brothers "richer" while slamming their political network as "highly overrated" because he has "beaten them at every turn". "But if you're a Democrat and you stand up to Elizabeth Warren and corral enough votes for financial reform. you're darn right we'll work with you".

The Koch-backed network of political organizations - which were founded by brothers Charles and David Koch but now include a larger group of donors - have historically spent millions of dollars backing Republican candidates for office.

The Kochs' decision nonetheless sends a strong message to Republicans that there may be real consequences for those unwilling to oppose Trump.

Trump asserted Tuesday night at a rally in Tampa, Florida, that he's the most popular person in the Republican Party.

Cramer has publicly voiced support for Trump's tariffs, which the Koch network is adamantly against.

He called out the White House and Trump-allied GOP lawmakers, particularly over trade policy and increased federal spending, and added that "the divisiveness of this White House is causing long-term damage".

Trump's criticisms come a day after Charles Koch told reporters that Trump's trade policies would be "disastrous." He appeared at a Koch gathering last October in NY to seek the donors' support for the massive tax cut package Trump signed into law late past year.

Mr. Trump tweeted early in the day that DeSantis has "my Full & Total Endorsement!"

"We can not support him at this time", AFP President Tim Phillips told a crowd of wealthy donors gathered at the network's bi-annual retreat in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Last month, the company was told that David Koch, 78, was stepping down because of his deteriorating health.
