  • Police search for thieves who stole 2 Swedish royal crowns before escaping by speedboat

Jewel thieves are on the run from police in Sweden, after stealing some of Sweden's royal jewels from a cathedral, before fleeing in a motorboat.

The priceless artefacts were snatched from a cathedral in Strangnas, about an hour west of the capital Stockholm, at lunchtime on Tuesday, police said.

Two crowns worn by Karl IX and Queen Kristina, as well as a royal orb, were taken from the 13th Century Strangnas Cathedral. The monarchs were initially buried with these crowns, but later exhumed, NBC News said.

The jewels - including two crowns and an orb, were taken from Strängnäs Cathedral.

The thieves have not yet been captured.

King Karl IX's crown is made of gold and features crystals and pearls, while Christina's is smaller and made of gold, precious stones and pearls.

"I knew immediately that they were burglars because of the way they were behaving".

'We have some different information about how exactly the boat looked.

The robbers then made their getaway in a motorboat that was waiting a couple of hundred metres away on lake Malaren, Sweden's third biggest lake, police said. He also said, "We contacted the police and they told us they had taken something from the cathedral". Thomas Agnevik, a police spokesman, told Swedish TV that the regalia were "invaluable objects of national interest".

He said it would be hard for the thieves to sell the very recognisable items on the black market.

The Swedish Royal Family's crown jewels from the 17th century are seen in this undated handout photo obtained by Reuters on August 1, 2018.
