Trump hits back at Cohen and ‘fake news’ over Tower meeting allegations

  • President Trump waves after stepping off Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House Thursday. He was returning from a trip to Iowa and Illinois

The meeting was attended by the president's son, Donald Trump Jr., as well as Paul Manafort, the former chairman of Trump's presidential campaign, and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

Trump himself jumped on the anti-Cohen bandwagon Sunday, as he retweeted a former Cohen defense of Donald Trump, Jr., regarding the Russian Federation meeting.

Trump also took aim at Cohen for hiring Lanny Davis, a high-profile lawyer perhaps best known for working for Bill and Hillary Clinton. "If they [Mueller's investigation] rely on would destroy whatever case they have".

Giuliani also warned Cohen not to speak out about Trump, claiming Cohen is violating attorney-client privilege and is in "grave jeopardy" of being disbarred.

In his Fox appearance on Sunday, Giuliani said Trump felt "disappointed" that his former ally had turned against him, acknowledging the split that now existed between Trump and Cohen while saying they did not feel "at war" with Cohen at this point. That's the date when Trump made that primary election night victory speech where he teased his upcoming anti-Hillary speech where he'd reveal a bunch of new dirt on Hillary, a speech that ended up never happening. Big problem for the Trump Team, if he was at such a planning meeting.

For his part, Cohen - the president's former fixer who, until recently, was one of his most loyal defenders - has gone on the offensive.

Cohen recorded conversations he had with Trump and others, and the recordings are now in the hands of federal investigators.

Giuliani declined to name the witnesses. Cohen has no hard evidence, the sources say, but is willing to testify to Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Giuliani said Trump could make a decision this week or next on whether to sit for an interview.

And that could mean the president knew that Russian Federation was trying to help get him elected.

President Trump steps up pressure, but Iran says it’s ‘unimpressed’
Several observers noted the similarities between the threats on Iran, and Trump's "maximum pressure" campaign towards Pyongyang. The State Department, though, says no known member of the Iranian exile group was invited to Pompeo's speech.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment. This prep meeting would have been on June 7th, 2016.

In this photo taken on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016, Kremlin-linked lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya speaks to a journalist in Moscow, Russia.

Asked whether he meant Trump was considering firing Mueller, Giuliani replied: "No. No".

The official story later changed. "Our expert analysis is done until we get the raw copy, which we are seeking", Giuliani told Fox News. He wanted to speak with wealthy Moscow entrepreneur and entertainer, Emin Agalarov, the publicist's client, before finalizing details.

"So the Fake News doesn't waste my time with dumb questions, NO".

Alan Futerfas, a lawyer for the Trump Organization and Donald Trump Jr., told Reuters, "Donald Trump Jr. has been professional and responsible throughout the Mueller and Congressional investigations". But from the start, I've had the sense that Giuliani does know specifically what Cohen is talking about but is denying the specifics. He again said the tape does not show Trump breaking the law.

His lawyer Alan Futerfas issued a statement Thursday evening saying that: "Donald Trump Jr. has been professional and responsible throughout the Mueller and Congressional investigations".

Trump is seen with former Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal over a decade ago.

Still, the meeting gave Trump critics ammunition for their collusion claims.

Guiliani would not discuss the conditions his team is requesting for Trump to participate in an interview, but hinted that the President's legal team was interested in limiting the discussion to events before the election.
