Looting became a problem several days ago as evacuations began, leading authorities to beef up patrols in neighborhoods, he said Sunday.

A firefighter waters down a back burn on Cloverdale Road near the town of Igo, Calif., on Saturday. He was treated at the scene but died before he could be taken to a hospital. He had been with California's Arrowhead Interagency Hotshots for four years and reached the rank of captain.

"There's so much smoke up there, it's actually keeping the temperature down by about 10 degrees", Barufaldi said.

The blaze was one of about a dozen major wildfires burning across California on Saturday and of almost 90 overall from Texas to Oregon.

Crews attacking the Carr fire in and around Redding said they had located another body - the fourth civilian to perish in that blaze.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) estimates more than 300 fires were burning across California as of Sunday morning.

"Over the years, we're putting more people in harm's way", he said.

"We don't want to give the impression that all these people have suffered some kind of grave circumstances", Cogle said.

It's now the largest of more than 20 fires burning in California.

About 12,000 firefighters have responded to the wildfires from within California. Another 800 personnel have been deployed by the California National Guard.

He said the fire behavior was so erratic, there were tornadoes within the fire "tossing around equipment, blowing windows out of Cal Fire pickup trucks". "There's a finite number of resources in California, and obviously we're employing them at the highest-priority incidents", Cox said.

The Carr Fire, the deadliest and most destructive of nearly 90 wildfires burning from Texas to OR, has charred almost 34,000 hectares of drought-parched vegetation since erupting last Monday.

Two young children and their 70-year-old great-grandmother have died in the wildfire that is sweeping northern California with devastating speed.

And I really feel that the rain's come down and just washed away any negativity. Vettel was furious after making a mistake in the slippery conditions.

"I didn't know if the fire was just going to jump out behind a bush and grab me and suck me in", Williams said.

Disclosure: Chriss Street's parents were safely evacuated from their Redding home at around 3 p.m. on Friday.

While her parents grabbed photos and corralled their dogs, the 16-year-old scooped up her phone, an outfit and a new pair of sneakers she bought while back-to-school shopping. She says it's hard to believe.

"It's just unbelievable knowing you don't have a house to go to", said Anna Noland, whose home was destroyed in the blaze.

Fire officials said high temperatures, and large amounts of dried brush are stoking the flames and causing massive amounts of smoke, making containment efforts hard.

At last word, the blaze was only 5 percent contained and has showed no signs of slowing down. Fire crews also managed to halt the spread of the Carr fire within the city of Redding, Gouvea said. By the end of the day, Moore and two of his officers had lost homes as the fire devastated the 92,000-resident community.

"Very hot and dry conditions will continue over the West coast states through Sunday", the National Weather Service said early Sunday.

Despite the improved mood, a sixth person was killed in the fire, according to Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko.

Fire officials warned that the blaze would probably burn deeper into urban areas before there was any hope of containing it, though it either changed direction or was stopped before it could burn into the core of the city. Two firefighters were killed and the latest tally of 500 destroyed structures was sure to rise.

Some evacuations were lifted but officials said Yosemite Valley, the heart of tourism in the park, will remain closed until August 3.

Redding Searchlight is reporting that two firefighters died and three have been injured from the Carr Fire.

The Campbells' home of five years is among at least 500 structures that officials say were destroyed by the fire, which also swept through the historic Gold Rush town of Shasta and hit homes in Redding, a city of 92,000 about 100 miles south of the OR border. Residents in some neighboring Lake County communities have also been told to leave their homes.
