  • Geraint Thomas won the 12th stage of the Tour de France on Thursday

Quick-Step Floors rider Julian Alaphilippe of France crosses the finish line to win Stage 10 of the Tour de France.

Froome is 3:21 behind Van Avermaet after recovering from a punctured tire atop the second of the stage's ascents, finishing with Thomas and most of the top contenders.

This was two seconds clear of Dutch Team Sunweb rider Tom Dumoulin and three seconds in front of France's third place finisher Romain Bardet of La Mondiale and fourth placed Briton Chris Froome, who both received the same time.

Dumoulin, the 2017 Giro champion, refused to see the day as a lost opportunity to shake Team Sky, the dominant force in the peloton.

"Can we just go to Paris now?" "He did it the last time he had the jersey".

The prize was boosting his 43-second lead over Froome's teammate, Geraint Thomas, to an advantage of 2 minutes, 22 seconds.

"I did not expect this, it's incredible", said the 26-year-old Alaphilippe after his first win on the Tour.

Wiggins also claimed team principal Sir Dave Brailsford could be "divisive" and "self-serving" in such situations - comments Brailsford laughed off after the stage.

After Criticism, Trump Delays Second Meeting With Putin to Next Year
There will be no relief of Crimea-related sanctions until Russian Federation returns control of the Crimean Peninsula to Ukraine. The White House said on Wednesday that President Trump wants to delay a planned follow-up meeting with President Vladimir V.

"I imagined winning it because it was a huge objective for me, but to win it like that, all alone.", Alaphilippe said. "I can take that".

"Everyone's got their own gameplan".

Froome punctured a tire on a gravel path atop the second climb up the beyond-category Montée du Plateau des Glières, the first use of a dirt road by the Tour since 1987.

"It little bit wacky races going on there", the four-time Tour victor said. "So it was a little bit of a comedy of errors going on there".

It could be his Sky team mate Geraint Thomas, who is the best-placed of the GC (general classification) riders after safely going through the first nine stages, including the much-feared cobbles-peppered route on Sunday, which was fatal to Porte's hopes.

The rider leading at the end of the first mountain stage has gone on to win the Tour every year since 2012 but Van Avermaet knows he will bring that sequence to an end. "It's a long way to Paris but I'm really happy to have this one for a minimum of one day".

There will be two more stages in the Alps with a summit finish at the iconic Alpe d'Huez, but fireworks should not be expected as the top guns are likely to hold fire, waiting for the finale in the Pyrenees.

Given the difficulty of those stages, Van Avermaet said he had no illusions of fending off Sky again. And yeah, he's keen for me to try, if I do have the chance to stay up there.
