  • Officer Who Didn’t Step In When Woman In Puerto Rico Shirt Was Harassed Resigns

Officer Patrick Connor, a10-year veteran, was scheduled to explain to his superiors today why he did nothing as a woman was berated by a belligerent man who was allegedly drunk, and cursed the woman for wearing the shirt, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

The incident made national headlines this week after a video on social media showed Trybus approaching a woman, identified as Mia Irizarry, as she stood near a picnic grove in Caldwell Woods, a recreational area in the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, a green belt that surrounds Chicago. She even stated that she felt highly uncomfortable as the man questions her citizenship and loyalty to the U.S., and tells her she "should not be wearing that in the United States of America".

Trybus has since been charged with two counts of felony hate crime.

"A charge for simple assault or disorderly conduct is not sufficient", García said.

Timothy G.Trybus repeatedly walked away and returned to heap more abuse on Mia Irizarry. "Are you a citizen of the United States", Trybus is heard asking.

Finally an uninvolved bystander, who had been watching the scene unfold, called for more police. "Are you a United States citizen?" he screamed, referring to the shirt as "un-American".

"I will never get to hear from this man, this protector, his reasoning for why my safety, no, my life, had such little value to him", she said, adding that she grateful that he no longer has a job where he might treat other like her.

"We don't know what was happening outside the video; we don't know what was going on inside his (Connor's) head at the time", the attorney, Tamara Cummings, said Thursday. "Then you should not be wearing that", he continued.

In the video, Connor can be seen walking away.

"Officer, officer? I feel highly uncomfortable".

The harasser didn't seem to realize that Puerto Rico is, in fact, part of the United States America.

The video of the exchange sparked outrage, and even Puerto Rico's governor, Ricardo Rosselló, weighed in and called it "appalling" and he said "a Puerto Rican woman was brutally harassed by a bigot while an officer did not interfere".

Garcia posted a statement in which he said, "The Puerto Rican community deserves an apology and the young woman deserves justice from the Cook County Forest Preserve and the Cook County Justice System".

Cook County Commissioner Jesús "Chuy" García had called for hate crimes charges against Trybus.
