"Great progress being made", the president said in a tweet that included both a copy of Kim's letter, dated 6 July, and its translation.

I deeply appreciate the energetic and extraordinary efforts made by Your Excellency Mr. President for the improvement of relations between the two countries and the faithful implementation of the joint statement.

"I firmly believe that the strong will, honest efforts and unique approach of myself and Your Excellency Mr. President aimed at opening up a new future between the DPRK and the USA will sure surely come to fruition", Kim writes. Although Pompeo insisted progress continued to be made, North Korea accused the USA of making "gangster-like" demands.

The President's release of the letter comes shortly after North Korean officials failed to show up to a meeting with USA leadership.

Ms Nauert said North Korea's vice chairman Kim Yong Chol had agreed to meet on or about 12 July in Panmunjom with an American delegation, but the meeting did not materialise.

"The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know that critics will try to minimize the work that we've achieved", he said.

The North Korean leader said he hopes to "bring our next meeting forward" in the concluding sentence of the letter.

Pompeo had said a Pentagon team would meet with the North's officials on or around Thursday at the inter-Korea border to discuss the repatriation.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo ignored a question about the apparent snub when asked by reporters traveling with him in Brussels on Thursday.

Pompeo called the talks "productive", although North Korea said it was disappointed with the emphasis on denuclearization with a lack of security guarantees.

North Korea, meanwhile, lashed out at Washington for presenting "gangster-like demands" for complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization.

The Defense Department estimates there are up to 5,300 sets of USA service member remains still somewhere in North Korea.

There is speculation that North Korea may also want payment for the return of the remains, our correspondent adds.

CNN reported last month that the Trump administration is expecting North Korea to return up to 200 sets of remains and that planning for the exchange has been underway.

North Korea said Saturday it was seeking the "earliest start of the working-level talks" on the recovery of US remains.
