  • Democrats' long-shot plan to stop Trump's Supreme Court pick

Kavanaugh also credited his mother as having "overcame barriers", becoming a Montgomery County Circuit Court judge in 1993.

The decision has far-reaching implications for America on everything from abortion to guns to immigration. Of the court's liberal justices, Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 85 and Stephen Breyer turns 80 next month, so Trump may well get another opportunity to cement conservative dominance of the court for years to come.

"Thrilled tonight with @realdonaldtrump's pick for the United States Supreme Court", Rogers posted on Twitter.

Over the course of Judge Kavanaugh's impressive legal career, he has built a reputation as a fair, independent, and mainstream judge who has earned widespread respect from his peers.

With reality television-style suspense, he had kept everyone guessing up until the last moment.

Two other candidates for the seat of retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy - Judge Amy Coney Barrett and Judge Raymond Kethledge - were not the focus of Trump's morning discussions, according to those familiar with the discussions.

The official said Trump decided on Kavanaugh because of his large body of jurisprudence cited by other courts, describing him as a judge that other judges read. Throughout this process I have witnessed firsthand your appreciation for the vital role of the American judiciary. "But this is really about the process and whether or not the corporate right is going to be in charge of picking the Supreme Court in a seat, in a nomination that's likely to tip the scales substantially". "Mr. President, I am grateful to you and I am humbled by your faith in me", he declared.

Kavanaugh then served as Bush's counsel in the White House before Bush nominated him for the D.C. Circuit in July 2003. Kavanaugh also did preliminary work that led to Clinton's impeachment for an affair with a White House intern. He is a fine husband, father, and friend-and a man of the highest integrity. Judge Brett Kavanaugh looked to have the inside track within the White House last week but may have hit a snag.

None of the judges named is older than 53, meaning any of them could sit on the court for several decades, allowing Trump to make a lasting imprint on the nation's laws. He has ruled against voting rights.

Uruguay vs. France, Brazil vs. Belgium, Sweden vs. England, Russia vs. Croatia
The quarter-finals of the World Cup promises to be just as exciting as the round of 16, with some sumptuous fixtures in store. Which brings us full circle to England who, as previously mentioned, will face Sweden .

Each of the nine justices serves a lifetime appointment. That gave Trump his another chance to make a lasting impact on the Supreme Court and to give conservatives a 5-4 majority. But Judge Kavanaugh may not be so accommodating. He is hoping to replicate his successful announcement of Justice Neil Gorsuch a year ago.

The front-runner was a front-runner for a reason.

If the party sticks together, the president's choice will be sitting on the Supreme Court when its new term starts in October.

"In selecting Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fill the vacancy left by Justice Kennedy, President Trump has chosen a nominee with impeccable credentials and a strong record of upholding the Constitution". Republicans now hold a 51-49 majority, but Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) is battling brain cancer and is unlikely to be present for a vote.

A nominee needs a simple majority of 51 votes to be confirmed. It is unclear whether Senator John McCain, a Republican, will vote as he is undergoing brain cancer treatment.

"As I have always said, I believe the Senate should hold committee hearings; Senators should meet with him, we should debate his qualifications on the Senate floor and cast whatever vote we believe he deserves". All three voted in favor of Neil Gorsuch, Trump's first Supreme Court nominee.

As promised, Trump made his pick from a list of more than two dozen potential nominees drawn up with the help from conservative legal activists at The Federalist Society and The Heritage Foundation. The White House hopes Kyl's close ties to Senate Republicans will help smooth the path for confirmation.

All eyes on which senators?
