Supporters of Trump steadfast despite immigration uproar

  • Trump says his immigration policies have ‘liberated towns’ from MS-13

The swift turn of events is leading to new questions about the advisers who encouraged Trump to hold the line, even as his staunchest protectors urged him to change course.

When the crisis of family separations erupted at the border, GOP leaders revised the compromise bill to bolster a provision requiring parents and children to be held together in custody.

Members of Congress have learned Trump simply can't be trusted to keep to a single position from one day to the next. Now going on three months without a communications director, Trump determined himself when and how to speak out.

United chief executive Oscar Munoz said: "We want no part of it".

President Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order that allows the administration to continue to protect the border with zero-tolerance policy, while also avoiding the separation of illegal alien families, as far as possible under the law. That left leaders scrambling Wednesday to ensure rank-and file lawmakers that Trump would stick with them.

But a Congressional fix may be easier said than done, as both chambers faced setbacks in their efforts to reach a compromise on Wednesday ahead of an expected votes on Thursday. Those defections - almost 1 in 5 GOP lawmakers - underscored the party's chasm over immigration and the election-year pressures Republicans face to stay true to districts that range from staunchly conservative to pro-immigrant. House Speaker Paul Ryan took two dozen wavering lawmakers to the White House so Trump could cajole them into supporting the bill. But Trump was loathe to give up leverage in the fight for his border wall funding and other priorities.

Reflecting his displeasure with Congress, Trump also announced he would no longer host the annual congressional picnic Thursday, leading to the dejected sight of popcorn machines being re-loaded into their crates and trucked away from the South Lawn.

But later, Wolfe's boss said he "misspoke" and that no decision had been made.

Elsewhere, a flurry of activity surrounded the sudden about-face. If caving into intense political pressure wasn't enough of a setback for the president, his executive order also misspelled the word "separation" as "seperation".

Both victims have been taken to hospital. "I asked her 'Why did you do it.' She did not answer". A computer was seized from the studio where she lived a few kilometres (miles) from the shop.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio welcomed the executive order. "That's not the goal here", the aide said.

As he signed the executive order Wednesday, Trump stressed that he had heard from his daughter, saying, "Ivanka feels very strongly" and "I think anybody with a heart would feel very strongly about it". My wife feels very strongly about it.

"We worked very hard to keep our commitments and to be flexible throughout this process, and I truly hope that colleagues who up to a couple days ago were working with us constructively would now turn around and blow up our agreement", he said.

"It is placing a tremendous strain on a system that was already struggling to provide these kids with their constitutionally mandated protections", Baxter-Neal said. Melania Trump issued a rare policy statement over the weekend in which she split with her husband over the administration's policy. Afterward, he tweeted he was pleased with her performance.

The recent furor over the family separations, and the chaotic White House response, have engulfed Republicans less than five months before November elections that will determine whether the GOP remains in control of Congress. He cast the issue as a cultural flashpoint that his conservative base would devour, such as his attacks on National Football League players who kneel or his defense of Confederate statues. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was heckled June 19 while she dined at a Mexican restaurant in the Washington area.

"The dilemma is that if you're weak - if you're weak, which some people would like you to be, if you're really, really, pathetically weak, the country's going to be overrun with millions of people", he said, gesticulating widely to illustrate the dueling options.

"So you do all this vetting, fingerprinting, an Federal Bureau of Investigation background check, and then the placement is sent to Washington D.C. for final approval", Baxter-Neal said. That's a tough dilemma.

Gene Hamilton, legal counsel to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, said the Justice Department will ask a court to allow the administration to detain families for longer than 20 days. In April, the U.S. attorney general announced a "zero-tolerance" policy to criminally charge and jail undocumented border crossers. One White House official said late Wednesday the immigration mess was unlikely to help his prospects.

Mr Trump's order came after a public outcry at home and globally over the policy, widely seen as inhumane.
