FCC leader promises better Internet as net neutrality rules expire

  • Net Neutrality Ends Today, But The Fight To Protect Internet Speeds Rages On

The agency said the regulations were unnecessary and unhelpful, but critics counter that internet service providers will now have too much control over the flow of online content. Chairman Ajit Pai has said the previous setup was "heavy-handed" and that this newer "light touch" approach will spur more investment and innovation.

"Under the Federal Communications Commission's Restoring Internet Freedom Order, which takes effect Monday, the internet will be just such an open platform". Continue reading to find out what changes today and what lies ahead for the charged issue.

E-commerce startups have feared that they could end up on the losing end of paid prioritization, with their websites and services loading more slowly than those run by internet behemoths.

Throttling: Service providers could not slow the transmission of data because of the nature of the content, as long as it was legal.

The broadband providers typically frame this issue as wanting to be able to give special treatment to certain applications, where having extremely low lag times could mean the difference between life and death.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted 3-2 to repeal the Obama-era rules in December in what was seen as a major victory for Republicans who had pledged to scrap the rules. Fifty million Americans have access to only one internet service provider, and more than half have only two to choose from.

While the nation-wide net neutrality laws have been repealed, it is likely that State laws will be created to protect consumers from corporate greed and shady practices.

Grandma charged for transporting grandkids in dog kennels
Cheeks told police that she placed the children in the kennels, but she made sure to check on them periodically. Neighbors tells us Cheeks just bought two puppies, which is why the kennels are in the back of her truck.

The federal repeal of rules governing net neutrality will free internet service providers to create slow and fast lanes, or to prefer certain types of online traffic over others.

"In the short term, I don't think consumers are going to see any change at all from the Internet experience they've come to cherish", Pai told The Washington Post on Friday.

Supporters of net neutrality are pushing state lawmakers to fight the repeal, but Mayer says this cannot be done at the state level. However, the internet has been relatively quiet in comparison as the changes went live today.

For anyone who hasn't been following, net neutrality is the concept of treating all internet traffic the same, no matter where it originates from.

But they could start charging extra for services not yet offered.

Q. Is my Internet service about to slow to a crawl, like some activists claim? Today, those net neutrality rules were officially rolled back. Others, including the governors of Montana and NY, used executive orders to force net neutrality. But those rules don't cover every provider in those states, just those that do business with those states' governments.

Other states, including New York, Vermont, and Montana, are using executive orders and various other means of reinstating net neutrality, but at the moment, Washington is the only state to pass a bill protecting it. OR passed similiar legislation, but it won't go into effect until next year, as Motherboard reports.
