North Korean leader Kim Jong Un complained of "U.S. hegemonism" to Russia's visiting foreign minister on Thursday, as one of his top lieutenants was in NY trying to pave the way for a summit with President Donald Trump.

"I am confident we are moving in the right direction", Pompeo told reporters at a news conference in NY after meeting Thursday with former North Korean military intelligence chief Kim Yong-chol.

Speaking after the meeting, Trump said: "We are going to deal and we are really going to start a process", Trump told reporters on Friday.

Trump cautioned on Thursday that while he hopes a planned summit in Singapore on June 12 between the USA and North Korea is still in the cards, he wants it to be a "meaningful" meeting.

Disputes between Washington and Pyongyang led Trump to announce last Thursday he was canceling the meeting with Kim, only to say the following day that it could still go ahead.

Trump's reversal came after more than an hour with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Kim Jong Un's top aide in the White House Friday.

"The big deal with be on June 12". I purposely didn't open the letter.

Experts agree that a meeting between Kim and Trump would legitimize a pariah nation and grant North Korea a long-term wish.

The U.S. has previously insisted that North Korea give up all its nuclear weapons before it can shed its pariah status or get any relief from the sanctions regime. "We will see what we will see".

South Korea has accused him of masterminding deadly attacks on a South Korean warship and an island in 2010, and USA intelligence linked him to a cyber attack on Sony Pictures in 2014.

Still, people familiar with the talks said there was a rift amongst White House officials on whether it's too soon in the negotiation process to talk about ending the Korean War, The Washington Post reported this week.

The two officials plan to have a day full of meetings Thursday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters in Washington.

US President Donald Trump all but rolled out the red carpet for a top North Korean official on Friday (Jun 1), casting protocol aside and embarking on a characteristically high-stakes gamble.

Pompeo, Trump's former Central Intelligence Agency chief, has travelled to Pyongyang twice in recent weeks for meetings with Kim Jong Un.

Though he's accused of the Sony pictures 2014 hack and was sanctioned by the US, Kim Yong Chol was feted at the White House.

Mr Trump said it was "a very interesting letter and at some point it may be appropriate" to share it.

Kim's right hand man General Kim Yong Chol flew into NY on Wednesday to discuss preparations for the assembly. After all, Trump frequently contradicts his own staffers who ostensibly speak for him - why should we assume Kim won't do the same?

"Normally, I would be skeptical of a trilateral format", Oba told Business Insider.

North Korea's nuclear weapons programme has made significant advances in recent years and poses a threat to the United States.

Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of the North Korean ruling party's central committee, was allowed into the United States despite being on a USA sanctions list.

Meanwhile, North Korea suggested during high-level talks on Friday that the two Koreas hold a joint celebration of the anniversary of a historic 2000 inter-Korean summit this month in the South, an official in Seoul said.

This may be one of the clearest indications that at least portions of the tunnel complex remain usable, something the United States had suspected since the North Koreans allowed media to view the detonations.
