  • Arkady Babchenko's wife reportedly told authorities she believed he was shot because of his professional work

"I'm still alive", Arkady Babchenko, 41, told startled fellow reporters at the news conference held less than a day after police reported he had been shot and killed at his Kiev apartment building.

To the applause and gasps of the press, Babchenko took the floor at the news conference and apologized to the friends and family who mourned for him and were unaware of the plan.

Ukrainian law enforcement have opened a criminal case over the journalist's murder, according to the police press service.

Babchenko left Russian Federation in February 2017 after receiving threats, living first in the Czech Republic, then in Israel, before moving to Kiev.

"Special apologies to my wife Olechka", Babchenko told reporters, according to the Guardian.

The military veteran served in the Russian forces in the 1990s in Chechnya before becoming a writer and an outspoken critic of the Kremlin's use of force in Syria, Ukraine and other conflicts. "The killers attacked all of us by choosing the most honest, noisy, and fearless one, the one who is in the public eye", Kanygin said in a Facebook post.

The contract hit was ordered by the Russian special service, the SBU said.

"We strongly condemn this killing and hope for a real, and not a sham, investigation into determining who ordered it", Peskov said, adding that Ukraine had become a "very unsafe place" for journalists.

Unseen for weeks, Melania Trump tweets she's 'feeling great'
Former football star Herschel Walker is mobbed as he arrives Wednesday for the White House field day on the South Lawn. On Friday, the president told White House reporters of his wife, " She's doing great".

Some of his articles and posts outraged many Russians. In one particularly controversial article, he said he did not feel any sadness for the deaths of Russian army choir members in a December 2016 plane crash. Several Russian lawmakers even called for stripping Babchenko of his citizenship over the comment. "I will try to do this".

"I'd like to draw your attention to Russia's ongoing aggression in Ukraine".

In a social media post soon after news of his death emerged, the Ukrainian Prime Minister, Vladimir Groysman, said it held Russian Federation responsible.

At least one journalist has been murdered in Ukraine in the past two years in direct retaliation for his work. "That's why his murder is openly provocative". In the meantime, the Russian Investigative Committee has launched its own investigation into Babchenko's death.

Media outlets around the world, including Newsweek, covered the "murder", as foreign and Ukrainian officials voiced their suspicions that Moscow was behind the journalist's death.

Russia had demanded on Tuesday that Ukraine conduct a full investigation into his death, though many suspected that Russians were behind it.

Another renowned journalist, Pavel Sheremet, a native of Belarus who had worked for Russian media outlets in the past, was killed in a vehicle bombing in central Kiev in July 2016.
